Jimmy's super powers come and go. Mostly he just hangs out with Superman and is known as 'Superman's Pal'. But when he's in real danger, strange things happen. He transforms and temporarily exhibits superpowers. Its been suggested (in the Top 10 comics series) that he was born a superhero but his random and unreliable superpowers are caused from contracting a superhero specific STD. He once got Superman's powers on another planet and so assumed the identity of Superman while there. But he couldn't keep his secret identity very secret. He occasinally purposefully dons costumes and fights crime, but he seems much happier as a reporter. He is the only character, other than Superman himself, to appear in every Superman movie ever filmed (including the animated ones, the serials, and the TV serieses). Jimmy was also portrayed in many of the filmed Supergirl incarnations; Superman was not :)
