Originally tasked with the capture of the murderer Robin Hood. Later tales cast him as corrupt and cruel.

Since 1449 to present day, there has been an actual office with the title "Sheriff of Nottingham". Though in modern times the position is ceremonial and maintained for the sake of tourists. William Sadler and Thomas Lyng shared the position in 1449 and are the only named individuals to hold the position that was always shared by two people at once until 1835. The oldest tales of Robin Hood simply have the sheriff preforming his duties. Later tales cast him as the main villain, collecting much more taxes than required, taking bribes, and unjustly imprisoning and executing people. He was largely replaced as the main villain by Prince John of England.
