Often a much more dangerous foe to Robin Hood than the sheriff or prince John. Like many characters, he was in tales before being joined to Robin Hood.

A supporter of Prince John and in some versions of the tale, tries to force Maid Marion into marriage. He is especially useful to authors who don't not wish to offend law enforcement by using the traditional portrayal of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. He is something of a bounty hunter.
