Famous for his military prowess by age 16. King Richard was and is a very popular king. Though this may only be because of his younger brother Prince John's failures and attempts at usurping him. King Richard was not English, spent very little time in England, raised taxes, skillfully shuffled England's resources away from where they were needed to fund foreign wars, and went on a third crusade leaving the mess behind for others to deal with. Prince John, in a demonstration of really poor judgment and timing, attempted to seize the thrown from himself in the King's absence.
