Major competitors for Havok are ODE and PhysX, both of which are available free of charge unlike Havok.

Havok is reported to be moving to take advantage of GPUs' processing capabilities to calculate physics in the future, so it has the benefit of giving hardware acceleration in newer games without requiring any special hardware to be present.
