I've started working around the synonyms system.
At first this will be useful when adding new tags (with automatic replacement) and when searching, eventually proposing alternatives ("did toy mean..." google-like).

Naturally we'll have an interface to add/manage synonyms, but for now I'm working on the core routines, so I wanted build a short list to work with.

For a start, is someone willing to post here a brief list of his most needed synonyms?
This is to see how data should be stored, apply eventual categories ans such...

ww2 -> worldwar2
abandonware -> outofprint
textplusgraphics, textandgraphics -> textplusgraphical

I don't really need any of them... here's some more if you want:
[[spoiler:vampire -> vampires
dragon -> dragons
simpsons -> thesimpsons
doom3engine -> idtech4
quake2engine -> idtech2
quake3engine -> idtech3
mmo, mmorpg, mmorts, etc. -> mmog
adnd -> adad (though, I wish adad was changed to adnd... for simple reason of 'and' being often abbreviated to 'n' and to maintain consistency with dnd and dnd3)]]

What about the idea on using singular when is about the player and plural when more generic? (the player is a vampire / enemies are vampires)
I would prefer to use plural, and the (anything)protagonist in specific cases.

adnd -> adad (though, I wish adad was changed to adnd... for simple reason of 'and' being often abbreviated to 'n' and to maintain consistency with dnd and dnd3)

If we do it, lets' do it right! So we'll use adad --> adnd (googling comes out that adad = "Alcohol & Drug Abuse Division" BTW)

Looking at the tags pages and a previous post I arranged some categories too:

Uncommon:
adad --> adnd

More descriptive: (but only if broadly used)
bttf -> backtothefuture
mickey -> mickeymouse
ev -> escapevelocity
oz -> wizardofoz
ww2 -> worldwar2
wwii -> worldwar2

Disambiguation:
arm -> armcpu

Common misspelling:
???

Too long: (these doesn't need to be be synonyms, just fix them)
homeoftheunderdogstopdogaward -> topdog (or topdogaward, more descriptive)

Other:
rtype -> r-type
xcom -> x-com
abandonware -> outofprint
textplusgraphics -> textplusgraphical
textandgraphics -> textplusgraphical
vampire -> vampires
dragon -> dragons
simpsons -> thesimpsons
biohazard -> residentevil (or vice-versa!)

idtech2,idtech3,etc:
I'm not sure as they are less descriptive then "doom3engine" and are not commonly used.

mmo, mmorpg, mmorts:
If we unify them, we have to keep the eventual information lost. (I'm not an expert about this, so I'm not sure what do they defines exactly. no, I'm not going to search on wiki this time :-)

The idtech# name are the official ones and doom3engine, quake2engine and the like are more likely to be known by everyone else, though.

The only thing we lose is redundancy. MMORPG = role-play MMO, MMORTS = [real-time] strategy MMO, and the like. We already have flags for role-play, strategy and everything else in the game info so why should we repeat it in the tags? The G in MMOG is also a bit redundant considering UVL is a gaming related website.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massively_multiplayer_online_game#Types_of_MMOGs

More: By losing the extra descriptor after MMO, you force people to generalize and to provide real info for games instead of substituting that with a bloated acronym. Like MMOTG is apparently MMO tycoon game. We have nothing to identify tycoon games, so instead of allowing MMOTG, we force the person adding the tag to add MMO and tycoon, and so we have a specific MMO tag and separate tycoon tag that has nothing to do with MMOs _by itself_. So, people can apply tycoon to other games as well instead of creating a separate tag for them and then having maybe MMOTG and tycoon added to the same game just so people will find those MMO tycoon games as well without knowing there's a MMOTG group as well.

On the right menu there is a link to a page with the list of synonyms. This page will be enchanced with synonym editing and other needed things.

I've set-up the procedure to batch-retag already tagged games. Tested with arm-> armcpu and bttf -> backtothefuture
I've retagged the "Back to the Future" group too.

Now I've to make the redirect from the bttf page to the backtothefuture one.

p.s. I like the MMOG idea.

edit
Redirection done!

I'd just like to reiterate "abandonware" is a mythical term.

# 7 months and 18 days ago
In fact it becomes the more realistic "outofprint "
The real abandonware are my ZX Spectrum games that I'll never play caused by missing hardware... :-(

What about the idea on using singular when is about the player and plural when more generic? (the player is a vampire / enemies are vampires)
I would prefer to use plural, and the (anything)protagonist in specific cases.

If you can make UVL _suggest_ the protagonist type for uses of the singular but still add the plural, it would be quite nice :) Vampires tag should be used also when the protagonist is one, so people can find games that have vampires in general anywhere, instead of having to check both vampireprotagonist and vampires to get the same thing done. Only getting games with vampire enemies would be accomplished if you add capability to search for games with more than one tag. For example, search for "vampires -vampireprotagonist".

You can already search for two or more tags (using AND logic) e.g. vampireprotagonist + anime
Didn't you read the manual? ;-)
(edit: Just noted that you added a "minus" before the tag. No, this is not yet possible.)

If you can make UVL _suggest_ the protagonist type for uses of the singular but still add the plural

Well, enhancing the synonyms system, we could store the (strictly) "related" tags beside the "replacement" ones... Looks nice and easy to do, too.

Added the option to negate tags search adding a minus before the tag.
For example, this one finds games with "femaleprotagonist" but not about vampires!

worldwar2 should suggest 1930s and 1940s tags.
worldwar1 should imply 1910s. (was waged between 1914 - 1918)

and counter them with:

1930s and 1940s should suggest worldwar2
1910s should suggest worldwar1

Many of the other historical tags could be added to have these kinds of relations.

umm, the idtech# to ~engine replacement goes in the wrong direction

edit: the fact that they're lesser known shouldn't matter in this case, it's the name of a game engine. It's like you started calling cryengine2 crysis game engine or cryengine (the first one) as far cry engine. The redirect is there so people who make the mistake get it right regardless. Id is naming their newest engine just id Tech 5 and are marketing it as such, so people will likely know it better with that name, and if we move to using the official engine names here as well, people who are familiar with the old games may learn to use the official names and we avoid _new_ people starting calling the engines with their wrong names as time passes by. There's also a reason why the doom 3 engine and such are in the alt names for those groups.

edit2: I see it's now fixed, but to farther iterate the why. It's like listing games that never were released outside japan under their japanese titles (as main) instead of the romanized or translated titles that are far from official. Although more readable to those not familiar with japanese, they are unofficial and should not be considered the main title in site like this. Maybe if UVL was a ROM site or similar, then it would make sense to have the fan-translated/romanized title as the main one.

I already understood and agreed, I just forgot to reply :-)
About the japanese titles, while I could agree, using the kanji as main name is quite disorienting for most people, while the romanized title sometimes can become popular.

It can become popular, but it's not one of the official ones. It'ls like we changed Diablo 2 to simply Diablo and any other game with a number at the end to not have it because they are popularly called that (they are, if you started talking about "Diablo" to anyone, they automatically assume you talk of Diablo 2). Also adding 1 to the game name when they're first of a series even though they _never_ had that in their name. So, I find it bad idea. But this has nothing to do with tag synonyms :|

Just realized the at the protagonist types should imply the presence of their said creature type as well. So vampireprotagonist should add vampires, robotprotagonist should add robots, etc. Insect protagonist might suggest any number of insect tags if we have them, animalprotagonist could do the same.

canceled -> cancelled (case of British vs American spelling)

Synonyms are now editable, just go to a group page, and add the "tag" icon. There you select the type of relation (for now only replaces/redirects is available) and type the new synonym.
To delete synonyms goto the synonyms page, and hit the [X] button.
Deleting synonyms is not "dangerous" because no games or groups are affected (and logs are quite descriptive so restoring is quite easy).
If you need to globally edit a tag (like converting from rtype to r-type, that affects games, groups and logs) please leave a message here, I'll press the "big red button" by myself :-)

Sanguine, I just added the "canceled -> cancelled" one, I leave to you the other one to let you find eventual bugs.

I think looneytoons should be replaced by looneytunes as "Looney Toons" is a mispelling. Then "looneytoons" should redirect to "looneytunes".
by Zerothis
# 6 months and 13 days ago
Looney Toons/Looney Tunes, would be my misspelling, I think; sorry. "Looney Tunes" is the proper spelling. However Warner often intentionally uses "Looney Toons" themselves. Also of note is the official spelling of Tiny Toons/Tiny Toon Adventures that is never spelled "Tiny Tunes". For the sake of searching, tooneytoons, Looney Toons, and Looney Tunes should be synonyms of looneytunes.
