Wanted to ask how to handle games like
uvlist.net/game-102547-Dynamite+Warriors
It is a Bomberman clone, but the group info for bomberman says that its only for games from bomberman series, sequels and spin-offs.
I would like to give all Bomberman rip-offs the tag Bomberman. In the past I also gave numerous Breakout clones the tag breakout, in the sense that breakout is some kind of subgenre (of action/reflex) and didn't handle it strictly for official Breakout games. Same with Pac-Man.
Now with Bomberman I'm not sure if I should also handle the tag as kind of subgenre or use it strictly for official Bomberman games.
Breakout is more of a game type (some of the clones may be more popular or better known than the original) while Bomberman is more of a regular game. I don't know if Bomberman actually has a story that'd make the tag worth restricting to "official" games only, but if it doesn't, I don't see any reason for the limit.
BTW,
Mine Bombers shares some of the basic gameplay of Bomberman as well, although it's too far off to be worth tagging with it.
I just saw that there is also the possibility to make a relation "clone" for a Bomberman clone, which could be used. But I fear with some historically important games which had dozens of clones (e.g. Space Invaders, Pac-Man) the relations list for them would explode. So maybe tags are the right choice then.

True, but that issue can be handled when it becomes an issue. Also, games with such vast cloning capacity likely have defined a new game type. Like almost every first person shooter was called doom clone (and later quake clone) for no good reason for a long time. Although clones did exist, I doubt vast majority was clone in any other way than by the fact that they were FPS games.
Nowadays this is rarer, but that's because people assume only "total ripoffs" to be clones and games are much more complex, visually and in gameplay side, to clone with barely any effort (back in the days games were _very_ simple, making cloning trivial) and making their own is simpler and likely cheaper as well.
But I have to agree in the end that creating massive numbers of clone or other relations to them is fruitless. Tag works better as I've done with
roguelike.
