The little man that you control in-game was originally named Jumpman and was latter renamed to the Mario that you know today. Mario was also a carpenter and latter changed jobs to a plummer.
carpenter? I thought he used to be a building superintendent. Wikipedia says carpenter, but does not cite a source.
