You lead your little army through the missions you pick, losses carrying over to the following missions and you restoring and buying new squads every once in a while between missions with your limited funds. There's no base building, no super powers, only your squads and the massive forces against you. Although you may get past a mission, your losses may easily be too great to allow progressing any farther (and this may become apparent only after several missions). This leads to much frustration if you can't change your tactics to match in the earlier missions and effectively leads focus on minimizing your losses rather than just meeting the mission goals.
