Though it is a side-scrolling shooter, Rescue Raiders can also be called the first-ever real-time strategy game. It pre-dates Warcraft, Dune II, or Carrier Command by several years. However, it has the hallmarks of an RTS: accumulate resources, build units, attack the enemy base and defend your own. You can even repair or capture strongpoints.
