Escape Velocity
Ambrosia Software's Escape Velocity series.
The Escape Velocity series is a trilogy of three shareware sci-fi games released by Ambrosia Software.

The original Escape Velocity Classic came out in 1996. EV Override and EV Nova followed it in 1998 and 2002, respectively.

Most of the gameplay is in a top-down perspective wherein the player flies one of many starships.

All of the games are expandable with plug-ins to one degree or another.
