Although pretty much always seen with numbers 1 to 9 being placed in a grid of 3x3, there's no math involved. The only criteria to win is to have the same symbol appear only once horizontally or vertically on single row or column, so instead of numbers you could be ordering any other symbols as well and you'd be using exactly same logic to win the game.
