Some games have this great freeform control bit where you wave the controls about in some fashion to do... things. I'd like to tag them as such, but I have no idea what it should be called. A lot of Wii games have this because the controller is especially suited for this, but many other systems have it as well.
I only know Die by the Sword and Alone in the Dark 5 to have it on other systems, and any other similar cases fall in with
gestures.
Wii is already excluded in gestures, so maybe I should just rework the description of that group and use it for these as well? There's just the difference of making shapes on the screen versus controlling the character's hand or hands more freely.
maybe the phrase your looking for is "digitally articulated control". A control scheme where the player is given detailed control of movement rather that the much more common meta-control.
Metacontrol, press forward to walk takes one button or axis. Walking follows a pattern of lean forward, let right hip move backward, lean left, bend knee+ankle up+move move hip forward, move hip forward, straighten knee, relax ankle, stop moving hip, repeat for left leg, repeat all. Or press further on an axis for to start a jogging or running cycle. Press less to tiptoe. Walking, jogging, running, tiptoeing are built-in meta-actions, or a programs of movement the player merely needs to activate.
digitally articulated control, player controls the left and right hips, left and right knees, left and right ankles, and body lean. They have to coordinate walking on their own. Or they have the option to, as meta-actions might still be programmed into the game, or even programmed by the player rather than the game makers.
digiticulated?
Considering the length of some tags, I don't see much reason to shorten this too much, but I shall favor virtual over digital (virtual articulation). And since I can't think of anything better than that, that it shall be, until the time comes someone invents a better name for it (or it gets a real one used by everyone) :)
