Eidos was founded in 1990 as a video services company and for the first five years of its existence was focused upon developing its proprietary video codec (compression / decompression) software, Escape.

Later the company acquired the following companies:

Bought by SCi on 2005-05-16, then by Square Enix on 2009-04-22. Eidos name will cease to be used when the "brand" is renamed to Square Enix Europe.
