I just recognized that in the editor form there is "don't use" text at the genre/graphics block. And the info is no longer appearing in the game sheet. Is this meant to be a permanent change? Should I use/make a "sciencefiction" or "fantasy" tags from now on?
Removal of genre/graphics type?
In many cases they simply seemed redundant with the actual location and genre tags as well as being too generic
I'm working on streamlining the game types so that in the end the main game type is one of these
https://www.uvlist.net/groups/info/maingametypes (list still growing) and the secondary game types/genre are the direct child of the main types.
The maingametypes are not going to be used as tags, they are just containers, as already stated.
You will notice that there are now some tag suggestion based on the main gametype.
All WIP as usual, happy to discuss any bit of it.

Yes sometimes "science fiction" can sound very generic. But on the other hand if I had to specify a tag for sub scifi genres or sub-fantasy genres I have trouble in defining it. Where starts hard scifi, where starts steampunk where starts space opera?
"Shmup" is in the suggested tag lists for shooter, but is an informal container group itself.
Yes, containers should be hidden.
Categorizing science fiction isn't easy (love it, but not an expert), but the point is that most of the "Genre/Graphic Style" options are already replaced by more specific tags.
I'd like this to be for all of them.

Now the containers are not shown in the tags suggestion.
In order to simplify the gametypes I'm moving the "shooting gallery" to "shooter" and applying the "galleryshooter" or "railshooter" tag as appropriate
The "flightsim" tag was previously just a container, now it can be used as a genre for flight simulators, with the possibility of being more specific with other tags (combatflightsim etc.)
Turn-based as a game type will also be removed, being more of an attribute
Little by little I'm adding categories under "maingametypes"
I'll draft a simple page showing the various gametypes and their sub-genres to have everything at a glance.

Sounds good
Thank you.
The recap page, only visible to editors, it this:
https://www.uvlist.net/admin/gametypes.php
- First column the main game types (some still missing)
- Second column the related main genres
- Third column the optional sub genres.
The idea is that any game should have a tag from the second column.
Outlined tags are containers, that should not be used.
Some containers will become simple tags, and some tags will be moved from the 2nd to the 3rd (or vice versa)

I have to get used to it. Lots of major changes. But I think it will turn out better than before. The third column with sub-genres still have a lot of tags in it that are not genres. Should those non genre-related tags that are currently child tags for genre tags stay child tags?
That page is live data, the idea it to see the current state, and from there decide what needs to be fixed/improved.
I had just a rough idea of the current tags structure, but once seen I made those proposals.
The third column as it is needs to be fixed for sure, it should be used to suggest optional sub-genres when the main genere is set.
It contains series too, that is nice in other context (like in the group page), but will not used for suggestions.
The most important is the second column as it holds the actual game genre that any game should have.

Question about the genre tag "actionadventure". Do I see it correctly that we should remove the adventure gametype from such games now and just leave action/reflex? Because actionadventure is defined as a genre inside action gametype (which is correct imo, because I also see it more a sub-type from action than adventure games).
Yes, we used combined gametypes essentially for a lack of proper tags organization.
But I suggest to not waste too much time on fixing the gametypes if the game is already tagged correctly.

https://www.uvlist.net/groups/info/dicegames
Currently "dicegames" is a container group. Should it stay a container group or should it be converted to a normal genre group? And are dicegames a parent of casinogames or boardgames or both?
Edit: Kept it as container group and put casinogames as parent. Not boardgames because I guess when you speak of dicegame your don't speak of board games (which could feature dices, but you would call them board game).
Edit 2: This is a typical problem I encounter. Now I got some random dice game, which is not based on a "famous" variant which has its own name, but I cannot give it a correct "genre". In all these cases do we need a "dicegame-other" "puzzlegame-other" "adventuregame-other" tags?

Maybe the solution is to not have Dice Games as container, so that it can be used when its sub-genres do not fit.
(please note that Card games has the same issues, and has quite a lot of sub-genres)
The "rule" that games would be tagged with a primary genere should be removed, to also accept sub-genres.
I just wanted to avoid complexity for easy understanding by editors and general users, but hopefully it still is.
