With multi-discipline sports games like like www.uvlist.net/game-100265-The+Games+Winter+Edition, all the related sports are listed as game genres.
I would expect just a "multi-discipline" tag to be used as the genre, but this happens because sport-themed tags are being used for game genres.
This would be easy to fix, but in the case of single-discipline games, I would expect the actual sport to appear as the genre, such as "Soccer," rather than "single-discipline", but I could be wrong.
Additionally, I imagine there are sports that could appear in both single and multi-discipline games, making it difficult to classify them properly.
This is both a logical and technical issues, so I'd like to hear your opinions.
Game genre and sport theme are mixed ?
We already have the multisport tag for sports games with different sports disciplines in one game.

Besides that fact that it looks a bit crowded in the game genre spot I never had a problem with it so far. The sub-genres of sport genre are the different sports.
But I think that a tag like this one should not be a sub-genre.

If you want to remove the individual sports as sub-genre and only keep a multisport and singlesport as sub-genre, then I think we don't need these two as sub-genre either. Then Sports simply has no sub-genres and we keep everything just as tags/groups but not as genre type.

It's a tricky one because I think there's value in having tags to capture the individual sports but I agree that the genre does look a little crowded and while it has a surfing section, I wouldn't call .
Perhaps there's a middle ground where we could capture groups of sports together and display those as the Genre?
For example:
Tags for:
Watersports - (e.g. Surfing, Swimming, Water Polo)
TrackandField (e.g. Athletics, Javelin, Decathlon)
Wintersports (e.g. Skiing, Bobsleigh, Biathon)
Combatsports (e.g. Wrestling, Boxing, MMA)
Teamsports (e.g. Soccer, Cricket, Baseball)
Indoorsports (e.g. Darts, Snooker, Ten Pin Bowling)
Courtsports (e.g. Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball)
Recreationsports (e.g. skateboarding, mountain biking, street luge)
Multisports (combinations of the above)
These could be displayed as the Game Genres (along with any other groups that make sense and exceptions like Fishing & Golf... - I've literally given this two minutes thought so I'm sure I'm missing something obvious!)
Under these we could still have tags for the individual sports so that they can be searched for in the database (e.g. if I really want to search for all games that feature roller skating!) but not have them display as Game Genres.
Big piece of work but I think between us we'd be able to categorize most sports into sub-genres? There's already the likes of 'cuesports' in use to capture the different variations of Pool and Snooker?

I am fine with any given proposal so far.
- Keeping it as is is Ok for me. The given example is still pretty much acceptable. But I know there can be multisport games with many more disciplines. This one here seems to have 20+ disciplines mario.fandom.com/wiki/Mario_%26_Sonic_at_the_Olympic_Winter_Games_(Nintendo_DS).
- Giving only "overhead" sport groups the game genre tag is also OK for me. But needs some work in creating this. I guess that means that all current tags of the "sport" category must be unlinked as automatically being game genre. Thats something Andrea must do. And for the "overhead" sport groups it must be changed from tag category sport to game genre. What I hope though is that you can still link proper parent/child combinations. But I think the tag category does not matter for that.
- Completely change all tags from sport category as being no longer considered considered a sub-genre is also fine with me. In the end, when people search for tennis games, they have to type in "tennis" in the tag field. We have no game genre field as we have gametype field.
Oh and while I write this I see that Andrea is already going the second route.

Thank you.
Working on the new gameinfo page I have to handle data visualization, but this is strictly linked to how data is organized.
I like those grouping genres, Wikipedia does this but also uses a lot more ways to organize sports.
For example Darts can be classified as indoor games, but I've found the precision sports category that would be used for Darts and Golf, and somehow fits better, for example.
So we have season-based game, location-based games, amount of players-based games, and so on, all together.
I have updated the genres page the www.uvlist.net/admin/gametypes.php#section_sport to better see the groups types.
On the first column, the genres with something in brackets, like (sport) are the ones not explicitly classified as game genres.
I'm going to create the Teamsport group and see if it fits.

I'm doing some "non destructive" changes to better see how it works and better testing with the new page.
Also this doesn't change at all how tagging works so containers, sub groups etc. are working as usual, and yes, how games are searches does not change, it is more about visualization.
-edit-
About the effort of re-tagging thousand of games, in such cases I can set-up a script to do it.
