Personal review

First Mahjong game for the Famicom/NES. A very basic Mahjong experience. No special modes. Just pure two-player Mahjong. Can't blame Nintendo for being a bit uninspired here, because the game is from 1983 after all.

Official description

You can enjoy the thrill and excitement of playing Mahjong yourself against the computer. There are 3 levels - Beginner, Intermediate and Expert - which are selected according to the skill of the player. It's great for practicing! Especailly, in the higher skill level, there are time limits (approximately 12 seconds) which enables you to enjoy speedy game plays. Also, it automatically calculates and displays the score on the screen.

NES-MJ-HKG, published 1983 by Nintendo in Hong Kong.

Its a glob-top! A glop top is when an integrated circuit is printed directly onto a circuit board and plastic is poured over the top of it. The alternative being to put the integrated circuit into it's own chip that is soldered onto the circuit board. While glob-tops are famously used by pirate operations, many early licensed Famicom games used them as well. Later, Nintendo would instituted licensing agreements whereby they would manufacture all the hardware for games created by 3rd parties. This was practically the end of glob tops for licensed games. But In this case, Nintendo themselves used two glob top circuits instead of chips. Glob tops circuit boards are cheaper to produce due to reducing or completely eliminating soldering and reducing or eliminated any additional assembly including hand-assembly.

One of the few game released for both cartridge and Famicom disk.
