id Software released the complete sourcecode for Quake III Arena under the terms of the GPL on 2005-08-19. The content of the game remains copyrighted and some of the content is trademarked. A project called OpenArena provides alternate content for the ioquake3 engine compiled from the freely available Quake III source code. OpenArena is usually not compatible with Quake III content.
Ubunutu repositories provide openarena as well as an installer called quake3-data that gathers the content directly from the 'Windows version' CD without having to individually gather the files from the CD yourself and installs them for use in OpenArena.
