Would claim this to be a mixture of more traditional strategy and tower defense. Player has no control over the minions besides the branch of path they walk in some maps, and thus most of the challenge is managing your resources, magic and keeping up production of units. The units themselves automatically either collect gold if they're harvesters, or move towards the enemy base in case of any others and attack any enemy units or buildings that they encounter.
