The game allowed switching between PAL and NTSC and stretching the screen to fit independently. While this was intended to let the user display the image how they preferred on a 4:3 monitor or TV, it had the unintended effect of allowing square pixels and an undistorted image when viewed anamorphicly on a 16:10 monitor. The aspect ratios and letterboxing were intended, widescreen support was not, so the widescreen tag does not apply here.

The Japanese title of the game is アウターワールド, but I'm unaware which ports were released in Japan to apply this correctly.
