Editor note

The known History of Hearts begins with Don Backus of Oregon Software who wrote (?)Spider for UNIX using Pascal(?). This was updated by Jeff Hemmerling providing multiplayer and somewhat decent AI opponents. At some point, Hearts was created from the Spider code. Bob Ankeney made extensive additions. His focus was on user interface, adding 3 different GUIs. Most of the game was rewritten by Ankeney. Ankeney's version is known to have been tested on BSD 4.1 & 4.3. Mike Yang provided Hearts in 1992 for Linux. Jonathan Badger became the maintainer of Hearts at some point. Silicon Graphics is invloved at some point but due to their license agreement and modern copyright law, I will not specify exactly on UVL (but the answer is in the source code).
