Official description
Target Word is a word game in which each player tries to determine which word the computer has chosen from a list in a data file. The player does this by choosing probe words having the same number of letters as the target word. The computer compares each probe word with the target word, letter by letter and determines the number of matching letters. The computer assigns either 'even' or 'odd' to the probe word, depending on whether the number of matching letters is even or odd. Zero matches counts as even. Example: target word: DOG; probe word: GOT The computer would report GOT as 'odd', because the 0 matches; the G does noth match since it is in the wrong position.
One to three players may play, and target words can be 3 to 6 letters long. The shorter words are easier. All target words are English words and no abbreviations, or always capitalized are used. Probe words should be likewise ('words' like FGH or JEO are not allowed).
Using logical analysis and careful selection of probe words, the target word can be deduced.
