Although the orientation and action bears a striking resemblance to Punch-Out!!, Heavyweight Champ distinguishes itself with a slightly more innovative control scheme. The player holds two handles on the cabinet and uses them to move and attack, imitating the actions taking in a real boxing match. The monitor section swivels to follow the player's movements. However, less memorable characters prevent it from competing, and the innovative control scheme may be more of a negative than a plus, since it can be rather confusing to a new player (not to mention tough on the arms!).
