Golden Axe was one of SEGAs big hits in the late 80ies, early 90ies.
As one of 3 Heroes you are out to crush the ambitions of Death Adder, a evil Warlord who wants to rule the Kingdom and make it a land of Chaos and Evil. Along the way you have to fight the Dark Armies of Death Adder which consists of Orcs, Skeletons, Giants, Dragon Riders, Big Knights and more. But you can strike back with mighty magics that sometimes fill the whole screen. And of course you can use your heroes weapons ( Axe, Sword and Broadsword ) to kill your foes. Each stage follows a special theme, and has a boss at the end, which you must defeat to progress. If you're successful you might the kingdom.
Overall a nice port, but compared to other versions ( e.g. PC or Mega Drive ) this one sucks, the lack of animations and colors do the game no good, and take a whole lot of fun away. Difficulty is decent, and controls are ok. In the end it's a mediocre game ( but you might want it for your collection, since there aren't many alternatives on the Master System )

Unlike any other port, this game REPLACES the classic three characters with a new single character, Tarik, who has the character graphics of Ax Battler! The player can then choose which magic to specialize in; each has the same number of levels as in the arcade game, so it would be madness to choose anything other than Fire. Also painfully obvious to arcade fans is the removal of the special spinning attack. Instead the Attack+Jump combo activates magic.
Oh and this is a single-player only game. The graphics are probably not some of the best the Master System has ever demonstrated, and suffer from being mostly shades of blue, grey, and black. Why this was not re-released for its graphically-superior cousin the Game Gear (which has a full vibrant colour palette) is certainly a mystery.

Official description
The residents of the once-peaceful city of Yuria have lost the legendary Golden Axe - the very thing that had shielded them from evil for so long. It is now in the hands of the unscrupulous titan, Death-Adder. Tarik, the seasoned warrior whose skill with his giant sword is both praised and feared throughout the land, has come forth to try and wrest the Axe from the grasp of the black-hearted warlord. Help Tarik to battle the many types of bandits that Death-Adder has amassed to protect himself. Using the sword, and certain very special magical powers, guide Tarik through the gauntlet of bandits to Death-Adder's castle! He'll be waiting there for you, and he's terribly reluctant to give up the Golden Axe! Are you brave enough to bring back the Axe, and thus restore tranquility to Yuria, or will you wind up just another victim of the evil warlord?
