Personal review
In Secret Commando ( or Ashura in Japan ) you're a tough mercenary who shoots his way through a hostile warzone. The game itself shows strong resemblance to Ikari Warriors from SNK.
Shoot, dodge and throw grenades. Basically that's it. This game also features some special weapons like Flamethrowers, but this doesn't help to overcome the dull gameplay as well as some design flaws in the Difficulty and Control Department. Presentation isn't that great too.
If you enjoyed Ikari Warriors, and the Rambo Games, you will like it !

Official description
Play as a lone warrior, armed to the teeth, sent on a top-secret commando mission behind enemy lines to liberate your comrades at arms. Released on the SEGA Master System in Europe as Secret Command, players will battle frenzied attacks from enemy soldiers, rocket troops, tanks and other enemies doing everything they can to stop you from saving the hostages. Use your trusty machine gun and a compound bow, equipped with explosive-tipped arrows, to pave the way to victory. Let nothing stand in your path. Play it with a friend in two-player mode for double the fire power.

Editor notes (2)
In this shooter, players can move in 8 directions but can only aim left, forward, diagonally forward, and right. Enemies can move and aim in 8 directions. In each stage players must shoot their way to the end gate and shoot enemies until the gate opens. Completing a stage earns and extra life. Players' M-60 machines guns never run out of ammo and are mostly useful against enemies on foot. Players have a limited supply of explosive arrows for tougher enemies, such as tanks and also for demolishing prison huts (freeing the POWs inside). Both players can earn extra lives for themselves. But the game ends if either player losses all their lives, but only after stage 2. In stage 1, the second player has infinite continues. Players can earn powereups by freeing POWs they find and by killing a pre-set number of enemies. But, only one powerup will appear on-screen at one time. Powerups include fast shots, fast movement, more arrows, explosive arrow upgrade, and mystery powerups that may kill everything on-screen or add an extra life. In addition, every powerup always adds an arrow. There is no practical limit to the number of arrows a player can carry, but a limited number of circumstances generate extra arrows (collecting infinite arrows is not possible). Each player begins with 5 arrows and the on-screen indicator will continue to show "9" as long as the player holds 9 or more. Some aspects of the game were dumbed-down for Americans.
The Australian release also did not use the Rambo license and is title "Secret Command" on the packing and "Secret Commando" on the title screen.
The Player 2 character is "Zane", who wares a yellow headband and exist nowhere in the Rambo franchise except this game.
