Act-Fancer: Cybernetick Hyper Weapon  Data East1989bIn Act-Fancer: Cybernetick Hyper Weapon, the player takes the role of a cyborg who has to kill a lot of aliens. The player moves from left to right while being able to shoot and jump (by holding the joystick up, the fall time is reduced and allows to glide for a while). Defeated enemies leave blue orbs behind which should be collected: five of them transform the cyborg into the next evolutionary form (overall seven) which is basically a weapons upgrade and allows to hit more enemies with more bullets.

Unfortunately the current power-up is lost and the cyborg reverts to the previous form after an invisible timer has run out; it can be extended by collecting red orbs which are also left behind by enemies. Another way to lose power-ups is being touched by an enemy or one of their projectiles, but then the cyborgs reverts directly to the basic form. Another hit means death and three deaths mean game over with continue option; additional lives are gained by earning a certain amount of points. When beginning the game or continuing after death, the cyborg starts with the first expansion level.

There are five stages which have a mid- (whose position also serves as mid-level checkpoint after defeat) and end-boss each. The two-player mode has the players taking turns without interaction or competition between them.

Astro Fighter  Data East;Zaccaria1979bAstro Fighter is a single player space shoot-em-up, where formations of ships appear at the top of the screen and move downwards in a pattern that depends on the type of ship. The player's goal is to pilot their ship to destroy the enemy before they reach the bottom of the screen, whilst avoiding enemy fire. Being hit by the enemy loses one of the player's three lives. If the enemy does make it past the player, then the same formation is repeated, but this time the player moves backwards and forwards a little further up the screen. There are up to five waves of enemies (cyan, magenta, green, yellow and white) per round, followed by a screen in which you must defeat "The Master", which is a single large ship with an eye in the middle.

To make things more difficult, the player starts the game with a limited amount of fuel, which reduces as the player maneuvers. The game is over when fuel runs out, but it is replenished every time "The Master" is defeated. As in "Space Invaders", the player can only have one bullet on the screen at a time, and can only shoot vertically.

Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja  G-Mode;Zeebo Brasil;Zeebo (Data East)2010bBad Dudes is a 1988 arcade game by Data East. It is also known as Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja. In Japan, it is known as simply Dragon Ninja (ドラゴンニンジャ). The game acquired a cult status based on its tongue-in-cheek scenario, including an introduction by the Secret Service agent: "The President has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the President?" Bad Dudes puts players in the converse boots of two street smart brawlers named Striker and Blade, bent on saving "President Ronnie" from the "ninjas" who kidnapped him. The game is a side scrolling fighter where player uses a combination of kicks, punches and jumping to defeat the enemies. Bad Dudes was ported to the Apple II, Atare ST, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, MSX, Ms-Dos and NES. G-mode currently obtains the intellectual rights to Bad Dudes (also know as Bad Dudes vs. Dragon ninja, Dragon Ninja)

Be-Bop High School: Koukousei Gokuraku Densetsu  Data East1988ae"Be-Bop High School: Koukousei Gokuraku Densetsu" is based on a long-running manga series about the advenuters of some high school boys, featuring quite a lot of wacky characters. I don't know the manga but the game seems to make good use of the license, capturing the atmosphere and characters nicely. While this game is basically an adventure game you spend much time with walking through the town from an overhead perspective. Over the time more and more locations become accessible. Some action scenes where you have to hit some other guys in the face are also included. The game also features a day-night cycle with certain actions only being possible at a certain time of the day. This combined with the fact that there is a general timelimit to complete the game and some random factors makes it rather hard to play without a walkthrough. Needless to say that you won't be able to follow the story when you don't understand Japanese. Graphically the game is pretty decent with some nice portraits and some funny looking situations. The levels are even some kind of story driven - albeit very clichéd - with mini-cutscenes and hostages you can talk to. The music is also quite nice. Negative are the low number of standard enemy types and noticeable slowdowns when there are lots of enemies and projectiles on the screen, which the PC-Engine could handle much better.***Enter alone, deep into enemy territory to rescue the kidnapped President in this overhead-view action shooter. Luckily there are fuel cans along the way which can and should be picked up. There are 16 levels in total with 4 different sceneries.
