Camp Eamon NEUC1985e[The following text is copyrighted by Eamon Adventurer's Guild Online and presented here word-for-word thanks to their generous terms]
#106 - Camp Eamon by Bob Slemon

Reviewed by Tom Zuchowski

MAIN PGM Version: 5 Extra Commands: DRINK, UNLOCK, FREE, TYPE Deleted Commands: None Special Features: Hi-res map in intro Playing Time: 1-2 hours Reviewer Rating: 7.0 Average Rating: 7.0/2

Description: "A group of Nazi fanatics have made plans to invade the Main Hall. Not only have they captured many fine Adventurers, but in their last raid they took the burly Irishman captive. They also took the complete floor plans for the Main Hall. With those, they can invade any adventure they choose -- even this one.

"The Nazi camp is nearby and run by a Herr Hess. It is heavily guarded by both humans and dogs. You can not refuse. The life of every Eamon Adventurer is at stake. There are rumors of experiments going on there, something called --accelerated cloning."

You get a look at a rough map of the compound, and are on your way!

Comment: It's a real hi-res map, too. I'm not sure that it actually helps any, but it's a nice touch. This is a quasi-science fiction offering: the Nazis are not only invading neighboring adventures, but are cloning grotesque half-human mutants to help guard their compound. But it feels more like a contemporary Eamon setting to me than an SF one.

You will pick up plenty of companions as you rescue various denizens of other familiar Eamon adventures, and the bad guys don't hit all that hard. Bring some heavy artillery, at least a 3D8 weapon. The guards are well-armored and can take quite a beating before you wear them down.

Not only that, but Bob re-uses old, dead bad guys as "new" guards whenever you trip an alarm, so you will find yourself fighting most everyone twice before you win through. This gimmick works well to keep the database small, and would have played quite well if the monsters got new names when resurrected. They mostly have names like GUARD #22, so it wouldn't have been all that difficult to manage. But they are not renamed; it is a bit jarring to find yourself fighting people that you have already killed!

This being an older version 5 Eamon, Bob had to invent his own version of things like hidden doors and embedded artifacts. This extra coding was not always elegantly done, sometimes looking for the entire name of a monster or artifact. It is a very good idea in this adventure to always type the complete name of the artifact or monster, just to cover yourself. If you don't, you may not find everything that you need to complete the quest.

There is no "Attaboy/AwShucks" text at the end of the adventure to tell you how you did, so let me tell you what you should do to feel like you have completed the adventure successfully: pick up the maps and the plans, and rescue the burly Irishman. Bonus points for rescuing the Cyclops and killing Hess.

Here are a few hints to keep you from going astray: the corrugated metal box found in prison camps is called the COOLER. The vault is important. UNLOCK won't automatically show you what is beyond the locked door or inside the artifact.

Players of the DOS 3.3 and 40-col. ProDOS versions would do well to watch out for a dirty trick that Bob plays on you if you do a certain action without thinking about the consequences. It's a pretty funny trick, if you have done a recent game save. I won't spoil the surprise by telling you what it is; just trust me and do a save before trying anything unusual.

This one ranks in at about (6) for difficulty, if you remember to type full names and watch those room descriptions for clues.

[52]***In Captain Silver, you play the role of Jim, a brave young lad with a taste of adventure. You embark on a journey to find Captain Silver's secret treasure hoard, which is rumored to be hidden on an island in the Eastern Seas.

There are six scenes in the game. During his travels, Jim will explore villages, fight his way on board ships, venture through caves, and wander around tropical islands. In each of these six scenes, Jim must use his sword to kill cats, rats, bats, witches, skeletons, and other creatures that are waiting for him. When Jim touches, or is shot at, by a creature, he loses one of his lives, but when he kills a creature, he can collect some gold that they leave behind, which can be used to buy items from shops. However, rather than getting gold, enemies leave behind some gold containing one of the letters that spell the word "CAPTAIN SILVER". If Jim manages to get all of these letters, he will be awarded an extra life.

Jim may only use his sword to start off with, but once he collects a fairy that floats toward him in every scene, Jim will be able to shoot stars at enemies, making his kills more efficient. The maximum number of stars that he can have is six. There are other power-ups that Jim can collect in the game. These include the "clock" power-up, which gives Jim extra time; the "boot" power-up which allows Jim to jump higher; and the "coffee?" power-up, which enables Jim to shield himself from creatures until he is hit by one.

There is a boss in each scene, which he must defeat in order to proceed to the next round. There is also a certain time limit, which Jim must complete the scene before it expires. If he does not, then he will lose a life.***There are two version of this cart. The "two-mega" version was released in Canada and Europe and has all 6 levels and all the enemies mentioned in the manual. The "one-mega" version was released in the USA. It has only 4 levels and is missing many enemies. The USA game manual still describes the missing levels and enemies.

Chrono Quest II  Psygnosis (Infomedia)1989cThis is a sequel to Chrono Quest, part of a series of games called Explora in their original French releases. After the events of the first game, you attempt to return to France of 1922, your own time period. A disorder on Explora, your time-machine, makes it use up all its metal fuel, leaving you stranded on an unknown time era. You need to find enough metal for Explora to be able to return you to your place in time.

The original point-and-click interface (text-based with auxiliary icons) was replaced by a fully icon driven one. There's a row of icons at the bottom of the screen with movement arrows, a save game icon, "get", "give", "examine", etc. The conversations with characters have a basic form of speech-synthesis which can be turned off (the full text of the dialogue is displayed either way). The game boasts 13 different locations and multiple time stages.***

CrossFire author2001aA fantasy medieval themed MORPG with a set of races and classes similar to angband and nethack. There are multiple graphical clients to chose from that will show more information than text based clients (stacks of objects on the floor for instance). Use of text remains heavy in all clients and more closely follows a the example of text adventure interpreters than simple commands. Players will need to converse with NPCs. But many typed commands are simple as well and players can bind any command to a keystroke. Also, there are a variety of shortcuts that can be preformed with the mouse. The adventures provided really depend on which server the player chooses to play on. Most servers allow multiple characters and they remain attached to the server where they were created. Initially there was no gender option provided but version 1.10 added this option. Many servers continue to use the monogender mode. Generally servers include a tutorial map, several interlinked preset maps, and attached maps that are randomly generated within a set or constrictions (themed dungeons). Players find a public bed (or buy their own real estate to place a bed in) to sleep until they want to return to the game, which is a quit-save. Any items they left lying around may be stolen, but their inventory and their character are safe when sleeping. A variety of locked storage, security systems, guard animals, or guard NPCs are available for things that just won't fit into inventory. Maid NPCs are also an option. Player vs player is decided per server. The game allows for servers to have PvP zones and for players to mutually agree to PvP (outside of zones). But absolute prevention of PvP is apparently technically impossible for anyone determined to circumvent the safeguards as sings repeatedly warn players that PvP is forbidden in places where technical limitation are already in place. There is an extensive skills system as well. Skills increase by using them. For instance, read a book that is within your literacy skill level and you will ear literacy experience points. This only works once per book, btw. There is no combat mode. Attacks are in real time. While characters can have all manor of attacks at their disposal, all melee attacks are done without visual feedback. Text feedback is given instead. Ranged attacks show the projectile, but are otherwise identical to each other as melee attacks are.

Find towers and dungeons. Hack up monsters. Gather loot. Sell loot. Practice skills. Repeat.

For POSIX/X11 and/or GTK systems. Confirmed to run on Ubuntu and IRIX. RPM available.

Leading their character through the game world, exploring it, commanding armies in battle and accomplishing various quests can mean great reward or huge defeats.

Gameplay is divided into two major sections: adventure mode and battle mode. While playing in adventure mode the gamer controls their character in real-time. With several classes available at the start of a new game, the player moves through the adventure map seeking various treasures, fighting monsters and accomplishing quests tasked to him by the local stewards. Once in battle mode the gamer assumes the role of a war chief, leading his troops in tactical turn-based combat. Battles take place on land or sea, in dungeons or castles or even in some items! Monster Combat  ?198?eINSTRUCTIONS FOR
MONSTER COMBAT
In the game of MONSTER COMBAT, you attempt to win treasure from various
loathsome creatures and leave the forest with as much treasure as possible -
without getting killed in the process! At the beginning, you are placed at a
randomly chosen location in a forest with a certain number of combat strength
points. As you move through the forest, you will encounter monsters guarding
various tempting treasures. At each meeting you are given a choice of
fighting the monster, running from it, or bribing it. If you wish to fight
you will be asked to enter the number of combat points you wish to use. Enter
any number smaller than your present strength. Each monster has its own combat
strength. These are as follows:

MINOTAUR ### ###10 ### ###CYCLOPS ### ###20 ### ###ZOMBIE ### ###30
GIANT ### ###40 ### ###HARPY ### ###50 ### ###GRIFFIN ### ###60
CHIMERA ### ###70 ### ###DRAGON ### ###80 ### ###WYVERN ### ###90
BASLISK ### ###100

If you enter a number equal to the monsters strength, you have a 50-50
chance of defeating it. Entering a higher number increases your chances of
winning, while entering a smaller number lowers that chance. No matter how
much strength you use, there is a 1 in 1000 chance that the monster will kill
you anyway ! Also, the more treasure you have, the more strength you need to
use to achieve the same odds against the monster in combat. If you choose to
run, your chances of getting away from a monster successively decrease as each
new monster's strength increases. Thus you are more likely to get away from a
minotaur than from a baslisk. If you succeed in running away, you are placed
in a new randomly selected square. Not getting away usually results in a
battle. Occasionally, while you are running, the monster will catch you - one
of the risks of chickening out. Of course trying to bribe your foe is an age
old alternative to running or fighting. For this, you must use the treasure
you have won. Whether or not you succeed depends on the value of the treasure
the monster is guarding. The more its value, the more you must pay to
successfully bribe your adversary. If the bribe fails, prepare to fight.

Treasure values are:
TEN SILVER SPOONS ### ###10 ### ###JEWELED SWORD ### ###30
JAR OF RUBIES ### ###50 ### ###FIFTY SILVER COINS ### ###50
BOX OF JEWELS ### ###75 ### ###100 GOLD PEICES ### ###100
TREASURE CHEST ### ###200

Movement through the forest is easy: just enter the direction you wish to
go - N for North, SE for South East, etc. The option to reset the display is
included ( press 1 ) in case the previous play of the game caused too many
lines of text to be printed below the map. The map will be reprinted and the
display cleared. Your position will be displayed on the map, as well as the
location of trees in the forest. You must go around the trees. To leave,
simply move to any blank area adjacent to the edge of the map. Scores of 500
to 700 are average. Anything above 1000 is excellent. As is common to games
of this type, I have left out a number of things that you will have to find
out for yourself (I've got to have some fun, after all). Good luck and good

Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness  Origin1987acMSRP: $39.95

As the story goes, the wizard Mondain was intent on world domination. Over 1,000 years ago, he created the gem of immortality and granted him invincibility. Mondain is evil. The gem of immortality is evil. These are indisputable facts because it says to in the playbook. However, you won't be seeing Mondain doing anything evil in the present world and time. The player controls a stranger from another world (Earth) come to the land Sosaria to save it and its people from Mondain. The fact that Mondain is immortal and invincibility makes this a difficult task. So the stranger will travel back in time to kill Mondain before he creates his gem.

A remake of the first game in the The Age of Darkness trilogy from the Ultima series of games. Origin rewrote the original Ultima in assembly language and updated the graphics. Some minor changes to place and people names were also made. The game did not have the "Age of Darkness" title, it was just plain "Ultima I". But a book was includes with the title "The First Age of Darkness".

In the box for this version was the 5.25" disk and copy of the game on a 3.5" disk, The First Age of Darkness book, player reference card, four cardboard maps, and a cloth bag of coins, 1 gold, 3 silver, 1 copper (not the real minerals). This version was published by Origin themselves.

Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress  Origin;Lord British (Origin)1989acRequires 64k.
Optional Mockingboard for music during Exodus portion.

This collection and the Apple II platform is notable for having an enhanced version of Ultima II not available in other publishings. It is further notable because it was sold for less than 2 months before being discontinued; making the enhance version of Ultima II a very rare and exclusive Apple II product. Enhanced Ultima II is readily distinguishable by having a blue boarder around the picture. There are many improvments as well. Additionally, the version of Ultima III was enhanced, but this version was also available in other packages. Finally, Ultima I that was ported from BASIC source code to pure assembly code is available in this package (but this Ultima I was released on it own in 1985).

This package is the only way to get the Apple version of the Ultima II remake.

Origin briefly had a publishing arrangement with Sierra On-Line. It went badly. Ultimately it was Ultima II royalties (as in, not being paid at all for non-Apple version sales) that pushed Ultima's creator into exiting the agreement and founding Origin Systems. However, royalties were far from the only issue. Numerous disagreements over Ultima II's publishing where especially memorable to Lord British. Sierra fought efforts by Origin to republish Ultima games. In the case of Ultima II, they succeed in blocking Origin from using certain art that Sierra actually couldn't legally use themselves (but they didn't let that stop them from using the art anyway). Moving ahead; By 1989, management at Origin was no longer interested in investing effort or money into the Apple II platform because it would not make a worthwhile return. No one at Origin was forbidden from making Apple II games; some personal projects were completed for it. Ultima VI was started for Apple II, then changed to Apple IIGS, then abandoned in favor of the IBM-PC version. Many of the features that were possible on the IBM-PC could have been done on the Apple II (witness that the Commodore 64 received two ports of Ultima VI), but the dwindling Apple II market did not justify the effort. However, Lord British just had to do something about Ultima II for Apple II. It received a makeover much as the original Ultima for Apple II had. It was packed with the Ultima I remake and Ultima III with enhancements, presumably to make it more valuable with very minimal additional investment in the Apple II market. The Ultima Trilogy package would be offered in this form to other platforms as well. However, The FM Towns version of the trilogy contained 3 re-remakes.
