Realistic physics for driving and collisions employed. Although the vehicle, stripped down to its frame, wheels, and suspension, is indestructible.

The stripped down so one can see the suspension and steering, which are not just for looks, they are fully simulated.

King's Quest I  Tierra;AGDI (Tierra)2001An updated version of the remake of the original [game= King's Quest] King's Quest[/game]. That is, a remake of a remake :) Text input, except for a few key plot necessities, is replaced with point&click. Graphics are beautiful VGA. Superb music and sound (optional). And many of the original voice actors from later official King's Quest games lent their voices to this unofficial remake (also optional). Play in window or full screen, 1.33 fullscreen (anamorphic) or 1.60 widescreen, and 320x200 or 640x400.

Like the original, this game is unfair :) So save often. However, save slots are limited to 20 at a time. A knowledge of nursery rhymes, fairytales and folktales is helpful. There are many object to find and us in the game to score points. There are usually several solutions to a problem that score a different amount of points. Misusing items will subtract points, sometimes permanently. 'Beating' the game is fairly easy, a perfect score is a bit trickier.

Easter eggs:
1. Take the goat to the middle of the screen east of the friendly elf and eat your carrot.
2. With the voice pack active, quit the game while under water and listen.
3. Listen to the sound when you use the mushroom
4. Talk to yourself until you say interesting things.
5. Read the note on every screen until it says something new.
6. Watch the rising smoke from the Witch's cauldron.
7. Use the magic mirror on yourself while using the ring
8. Look at the Rock at the base of the tree on the screen with the waterfall.
9. Look at the brush near the stump where the pouch is.
10. Save then talk to a castle guard while using the ring
11. restore your game and talk to the other guard while using the ring
12. Keep feeding the Troll till something else happens.

There is only one instance where keyboard input is needed, this is a totally point and click driven adventure. It is not offically part of the King's Quest series, but is a remake of an official game that is. This game is also available in the Icelandic language. The protagonist is a member of the Royal Guard (a military group). I'm not sure he is highborn however. The Ubuntu tag no longer applies as newer versions of Ubuntu, by default, use MIDI and synthesis that is not automatically compatible with all AGS games. No easy instructions have yet been created to explain how to get these games to run. However, older versions work with the standard AGS for Linux instructions. But, this game can be made to run on Linux without any programming skills.

Apprentice Herculean Effort Productions2003The first part of the Apprentice story introduces Lord Ironcrow, Pib (Mortimer Pibsworth), and some other main characters that span all three games. After many years of training to become a wizard, Pib is shaken by a dream in which Lord Ironcrow tries to convince the titular character to abandon his "toils of a magician" and join the army, see the world, have fun as a soldier, "Be all you can be". However, Pib really wants to be a wizard, and really doesn't want to be a soldier. In fact, he commits suicide in the dream to avoid it. This, despite the fact that being apprentice seems to consist mostly of mundane tasks, household cleaning, fanning the master with a palm frown, and even perilous tasks such as fetching the master's favorite sandwich. However, today is different, Pib is actually going to be casting his first spell. Well, that's the plan...

Pib addresses the player with his thoughts and helpful information rather than the story having a narrator or the character talking to himself.

Blood Frontier  author2006In the distant future, humanity has spread throughout the universe, to ends of the galaxy and beyond. A vast communications network bridges from colony to colony, human to machine, and machine to human. This seemingly benign keystone of modern inter-planetary society, however, appears to be the carrier of a mysterious techno-biological plague. Any persons so-connected seem to fall ill and die, only to return as ravenous, sub-human cannibals. You, a machine intelligence, an android, remain unafflicted by this strange phenomenon and have been tasked with destroying the growing hordes of the infected, while, hopefully, locating and stopping the source of the epidemic. labelimagesubject

Passage HC Software2007This description is one big set of spoilers (see the official description) for a spoiler free experience.
This is an interactive Memento Mori. The Latin phrase mean "Remember you die" and it referes to a specific subset of art designed to remind the audience of their inevitable death. There is only one permenent death of the protagonist(s) which is based on the author's own (the game is autobiographical). Though the author had not actually passed away yet. There are no saves.

Time passes regardless of what the player does. The view slowly passes the protagonist(s). The ultra wide (6.25:1) default view is representative of a passage. The protagonist(s) are passing away.

It is intended that one can run the game from the command-line to add to the game experience.

It is intended that one edit the unusually stored settings in /etc/passage/ to add to the game experience.

Various life events are represented in the game, including romance and marriage. These events can have lasting consequences.
[Zerothis]***Passage is a video game written by Jason Rohrer about navigating the maze that is life and the obstacles, rewards, disappointments, challenges, relationships and the inevitable departure that is part of the adventure of life.

Passage is an art game. As a result, some people love it and some people hate it. Check out the links to places it has been discussed on the website for some of the reactions.
The mechanics of the game are fairly simple. Your "score" is related to two things; exploration and treasure. Treasure pieces are represented by blue stars that you find in the treasure chests scattered about the maze of life's challenges. Some chests will be empty, so you must learn which sequence of gems on the front of the chests means treasure is inside. You have the option to team up with a spouse. If you do, exploring life will be more rewarding but some treasure will no longer be reachable. As in life, your spouse will die and that death will slow you down. In the end, you will die alone after your 5 minutes is up.

The most interesting part about this game is the emotions it evokes within the player of the game. The ultra-low-res pixel art helps here, by not being too distracting and by leaving plenty room for viewer interpretation.

Passage has no command-line options.
The arrow keys move the player around.
The Esc key is used to quit the game.
The game resolution and use of fullscreen or a window can be set by editing the files in /etc/passage.

Descent  author (Parallax Software;author)2010In the year 2012 the Post Terran Mining Company (PTMC) has used save labor to create automated mines on 15 planets and moons of the solar system. The mistreated slaves have rebelled, killed their masters, and claimed the mines as their homes. PTMC hires you to invade these newly claimed homes and perpetrate genocide.

Shoot the robot monsters!***This was a commercially available proprietary game. The source code was later released under the GPL (and proprietary and Public Domain, in other words a proprietary license) but the content remains definitively proprietary.

Mines throughout the solar system have been taken over by the robots built to mine them. Humans have been killed or imprisoned in the mines. It seems to be caused by some sort of computer virus. The owning company has hired a mercenary to rescue the surviving prisoners and destroy the main reactor in each mine, thus destroying the infected robots.
Shoot the robots, get power ups, find the keys, find the reactor, rescue the humans, destroy the reactor, escape the exploding mine.

Any commercial version of Descent can be played on Linux using either the D1X, D2X, DXX-Rebirth, or D2X-XL engines. Yes, That includes the [game=&ftag=descent&fplat=3]PlayStation version[/game]. These are all considered source-ports. All aspects except for movies from the Mac version are preserved. The graphics are enhanced through OpenGL, any resolution, and proper widescreen options. D2X-XL also adds modes, difficulty levels, multiplayer options, graphics effects, faster or slower options, weapons enhancements, massive level design improvements (multiple boss robots can work as a team, robots can carry keys and switches), and an extensive help menu.

The source code license can be read here. It is a fully proprietary license that permits anything except commercial use. The media headline "released Descent's source code (version 1.5) to the public domain for noncommercial purposes." Is totally $#!@&%, as "public domain" prohibits having any restrictions, including non-commercial. The original media remains fully proprietary as well.

[Sanguine]***Originally Aquaria was not going to have Linux port, but Alec apparently flipped over and ported it in one night (only the sound engine really needed porting). The most difficult part of the porting is case sensitivity in the filesystem rather than any coding part, Mac and Windows ignore case when accessing files while Linux doesn't, making files that open quite well on Win/Mac result in file not found in Linux. They're working to convert all the files and their names in scripts/code to match, so the issues will probably go away after a bit.

[s]The Linux release may be a bit iffy still.[/s]

(The thread shown in the source link has most of the stuff related to Linux port. Just scan for posts by Alec.)

Update: Released as part of the 2010 Humble Indie Bundle after which Aquaria was also open-sourced.
