For ease of reference, I will call it the 7.5th Angel (which it is). Unit-01 is immediately sortied and it enters combat with the Angel. However, it is much more powerful than NERV anticipated and Shinji gets beaten up pretty badly by it. So bad that the trauma causes Shinji to lose his memory. Misato and Ritsuko decide that the best way for Shinji to regain his memory is for him to get into Unit-01's cockpit and enter "virtual" combat against Asuka in Unit-02.
