Neo Drift Out  Visco1996At a glance, Neo Drift Out looks about average for a Neo Geo cart. The cars look authentic and realistic, the background could have been improved but wasn't necessary. Not the fanciest of graphics but I liked them none the less.

Although driving games aren't cutting edge on originality, I think Visco's twist on and old genre is refreshing. Yes we've seen top view racing since Super Off Road but they add a couple of things to refurbish it. The addition of real cars is helpful. NDO lets you choose your car and view its stats. At first I enjoyed this feature thinking "cool, customizable" but that's it, nothing more. That really threw me off. I can't help to think whenever I play NDO, "If only they added other customizable options ala Super Off Road, this game would be really fun to play." I can't stress this point enough with games, I love to customize my games but you get nothing, not even manual vs automatic.

Another addition is auto steer correct. I know I've lost you but let me explain. When you turn a corner and go from side scrolling to diagonal, NDO corrects your path alignment TO AN EXTENT. So right after you turn it lines up your car with the road. However, if you're steering like a maniac, you'll crash. This does take away some of the difficulty, but it is a necessity for a more accurate play control.

Also NDO shows what's up ahead via arrows at the top of the screen. Again this takes away some difficulty but from a lack of a smaller map (among other things), they chose this route for whatever reasons. It's helpful, makes the game feel cheesier, and makes you loose a sense of intensity normally associated with racing games.

If you're after a reason to download NeoRAGE, this probably isn't it. But it is a fun new game if you haven't played it. This is what I call a filler game. A game that doesn't make one system shine over another but adds to the overall system "experience". I find Neo Drift Out slightly addictive, until you reach a track that you can't get past, then NDO loses all its charm.
