Appoooh | Sega | 1984 | The most strangely-named wrestling game ever. Features parodies of Antonio Inoki, Tiger Mask, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Giant Baba, Stan Hansen, Abdullah the Butcher, and Umanosuke Ueda. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
Tag Team Wrestling | Data East (Technos) | 1984 | One of the first wrestling games. Includes a large selection of attacks (for 1984). The controls leave something to be desired (grab your opponent, use one button to scroll through your list of attacks, and press the other to perform it) and the computer tends to cheat. Still, it's highly addicting. The voice of the referee was later reused in Exciting Hour/Mat Mania. [Jacquismo]***I remember this game when I was stationed in Norfolk... True that it might be simplistic and outdated by today's standards -- but it had numerous moves that were easily performed and very gratifying to watch... it even had your protagonist interruptions by others running up through the crowds I dare anyone to play this game and not find it addicting {that is, if you can find the original arcade version} [Ducky] | labelimageminimize |
Champion Pro Wrestling | Sega | 1985 | A simplistic wrestling game similar to the earlier Tag Team Wrestling, albeit not quite as much fun. Play as the hero team, consisting of parodies of Antonio Inoki and Hulk Hogan, against the masked heel team. Although characters are much larger than in Tag Team and can jump, duck, and attack without grappling first, they are limited to only moving forward and backwards, which is extremely restrictive. Control is a bit sluggish, as well. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
Exciting Hour | Taito;Technos | 1985 | This game is superb and unlike a lot of other wrestling games released, it has a great control method which in a way is better than Wrestlefest's. You are a guy who is challenging a few blokes to get to the ultimate accolade in wrestling - the World Championship Belt. The guys you come up against are your typical O.T.T. (over-the-top) WWF-style characters, who dress up in silly costumes. You are trained in many wrestling maneuvers such as the piledriver and suplex, through to basic moves like a flying kick. You can even get up on the top rope and pummel your oppenent with the "Flying Butt Crush" attack. Between each bout your are presented by a short low-down of your oppenent, by some announcer who thinks he is recruiting folks for the army. What makes this stand out amongst all the other "official" wrestling games is the ease of pulling off these moves. For example, a piledriver is UP + KICK, whereas a suplex is UP + PUNCH. This might not sound like a major feature to the game, but how often in Wrestlefest have you shouted at your character, "Don't do a bloody throw, DDT the bitch!"? I bet it's a lot. | labelimageminimize |
Body Slam | Sega | 1986 | A joshi (female) wrestling game, featuring real wrestlers from All Japan Women's Pro-Wrestling (AJW) like Lioness Asuka, Chigusa Nagayo, Dump Matsumoto, and Bull Nakano. This is likely to be the very first all-women wrestling game. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
Robo Wres 2001 | Sega | 1986 | A wrestling game featuring robots (as the name implies). Choose one of 10 different sets of attacks to customize your character, and get ready to rumble! [Jacquismo] | labelimagesubject |
VS Mania Challenge | Taito;Memetron | 1986 | A two-player version of Mat Mania that eliminates the announcer, as well as many of the characters from the original. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
The Main Event | Konami | 1988 | [57]***A tag-team wrestling game. Choose two of eight characters obviously inspired by real wrestlers like Mil Mascaras, Hulk Hogan, and Ricky Steamboat, then get ready to rumble. An announcer that calls the in-ring action as it happens. The large Action button does various things depending on your wrestler's position, and another button allows you to tag out once you've gotten close to your partner. Up to four players can get into the game at the same time. [Jacquismo] | labelimagesubject |
Champion Wrestler | Taito | 1989 | - Press Button 1 for punch, Button 2 for kick, ->-> for run and both buttons for cover. - Move your stick and hit buttons as fast as you can to make power moves. - Each Wrestler have his own move. Try them all to find your favorite fighting style.***A wrestling game featuring Taito's own Rastan! Not anything real special, but it might be worth a try at least once if you're willing to sacrifice a quarter. [Jacquismo] | labelimagesubject |
Wrestle War: Sega Wrestling Alliance | Sega | 1989 | An okay wrestling game with a slightly disorienting viewpoint. Prepare to mash buttons like crazy to win grapples or kick out. The graphics are large, colorful, and very detailed. As with most non-licensed games of its type, the wrestlers are take-offs of real wrestlers like Bruiser Brody, Road Warrior Hawk, and Hulk Hogan. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
WWF Superstars | Technos;Titan Sports | 1989 | [22]***WWF Superstars is a great arcade tag-team wrestling game featuring greats like Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and the Ultimate Warrior. All previous WWF games pale in comparison. Punch, kick, body slam, and elbow drop your way to the championship match with the Mega-Bucks, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant! [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
WWF WrestleFest | Technos | 1991 | The best wrestling game of all time.***A classic wrestling game featuring Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Sgt. Slaughter, Demolition, and more! Play in either the Royal Rumble (a battle royale) or a tag team mode to battle to the champions, the Legion of Doom! This is one of the first games to feature a match in a steel cage. WrestleFest is a huge improvement over its predecessor, WWF Superstars, especially graphically. [Jacquismo] | labelimageminimize |
