Castle Adventure  author;Keypunch Software1984Also released by Keypunch Software in 1987 in the compilation "Swords and Sorcery" under the title "The Golden Wombat".***This is an enjoyable game I played on a PCjr as a child. One of the neat things about it was the extra items and treasures to collect. There are multiple solutions Only 5 items are required for the simplest solution to escaping the castle. Killing the monsters is not strictly required and many of the objects do not relate to escaping, their just for the high score. It is quite simular to Atari Adventure, but more complex in all aspects plus the added text parser. Three parser commands are all that's required for the simplest escape. Finding all the items will require considerable more typing. There is also an item in the game that tells how to escape, easy. Its nice that beating the game is easy, for less skilled players yet getting a high score is more challenging. Obviously, this was the intent of the author.
[Zerothis]***This is a text plus graphical adventure in text-only mode. Movement is performed with the arrow keys and combat is in real-time. But text descriptions appear at the bottom on the screen and the player can use a text parser for more detailed interaction with objects and characters or to use a more complex solution that the arrow keys can provide. While the goal is to escape the 83 room castle using 12 objects found therein. 8 enemies and two locked doors will hinder progress. Players may opt to find some or all of the 13 treasures to achieve a higher score. 1550 is the highest score possible.

This game was developed and published as Shareware by Kevin Bales. He used the term Freeware and asked for a suggested $10 if someone enjoyed or used the game. Keypunch Software illegally included this game in their Swords and Sorcery collection as Golden Wombat. The game is written in Microsoft BASIC and compiled.
[Zerothis]***You are trapped in a deserted Castle and you must escape. It is rumored that the castle is full of treasures. Can you find them all?

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar  Origin (Origin Systems)1985Comes on two 5.25' disks. In 1997 the full version of this game was 'made available for free download' at selected sites by Origin. However, it remains proprietary and not defined as "freeware" or "public domain" (these downloads can disappear or the priced raised at any time at Electronic Art's option). Several homebrew upgrades exist for this game that add features such as VGA graphics and Midi sound. The xu4 project allows this game to run on Windows, Linux, Mac OS 8, Mac OS X, and other operating systems. xu4 Also allows extensive modding of the graphics, enemies, items, and certain game logic.

The Ultima series continued to innovate with the release of each game in the series. With the 4th game released for Apple ][ and then ported to IBM-PC, the genre was taken to bran new places. There is no evil big bad enemy to defeat, and the point of the game is not to take advantage of people to get stuff to go defeat the enemy. Rather, the point of the game is for the main character to become a champion of virtue. The goals are literally honesty, humility, honor, spirituality, valor, justice, compassion, sacrifice, courage, truth, and love. Actions, inactions, even words can have less than apparent unhelpful or helpful consequences. Yes, there are still monsters to fight and treasures to find, but this makes up less than 1/8th of the game and the care and purpose in handling these things is more important than the end result.
