Alive... Behind the Moon Nova Media1996Alive ....Behind the Moon.... is an enhanced remake of the 1991 game Alive, originally developed by Lankhor for the Amstrad CPC.

On the moon's side which is turned away from earth a unknown cosmic element causes atmospheric changes. So James Butterfield, a dishonorable dismissed astronaut, flies with his friend Sven to the moon to check the situation and get a reward of one million dollars. Of course the space ship crashes. So the first task is to find medicine for the injured Sven. When that is taken care of James explores the moon and meets many foreign peoples like the Gouaks, Wounks or Amazons.

The user interface consists of many windows. The main window is in the upper right were a picture of the current view or conversational partner is shown. There the player can click on items to collect them or use items from the inventory to solve puzzles. Some items are showed in a close up view in a windows left to the main window when clicked on. There it can be manipulated further. Above this window is a mini map. Under the main window is a panel were the main actions can be chosen, e.g. looking, speaking or fighting. Left and right of this panel are the inventory screens were objects can be used and combined with each other. Finally on the far left are bars were the current stats of health, fatigue, durst and hunger are shown. These have to be hold on a reasonable height by eating, sleeping and so on

When speaking with someone the interfaces changes to another screen where left of the main windows the possible answers can be chosen. Under the main window the statements of the other person are displayed. Death waits behind every corner, a step in the wrong direction, a false answer or a lost fight lead to a individual game over screen.***

We have to go to Dinotown to solve the mystery of the prehistoric beings populating the city. Well, that's about the entire plot. First, we are approached by a dangerous dinosaur that compels us to enter name and address in a form, so that we come into possession of an identity document. We then find us on orientation map again, which makes up virtually the most gameplay. So we are at any of the countless villages only a short time and then land again on the map - assuming you will not be eaten by a giant lizard, because you have given a wrong answer. You go aimlessly through this area. There is an ice cream parlor, a car dealership, a golf course, a hospital, a radio tower, yes, even a disco. Only the ARAG insurance agency that employs the only human contact can help out sometimes. In addition, in the inventory a lot of great items are accumulated, which can not be considered because you do not know in 80% of cases what they are supposed to represent. There are no right puzzles, the difficulty is to find out at what place in Dinotown currently something can be done. Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold Apogee Software (JAM Productions)1993One year after Wolfenstein 3D, the same engine was used in another game. This was released one week before id Software took over the world with the shareware release of Doom. Doom squashed it; Blake Stone sold poorly despite positive reviews. id even had a stake in Blake Stone, it build the texture mapping engine for the game. The game takes place in the future. You are agent "Blake", who has to accomplish some missions. The goal is to stop the evil doctor "Goldfire", who created some aliens. The game consists of six episodes, each of which features 11 levels, nine regular and two secret. The elimination of all enemies on the current floor or the collection of all treasure items are optional objectives that provide bonuses upon completion. In the game ceiling and floor are texturized, which was new. There were no terrain heights, but you could use elevators to get back into levels you already played. Special level features include: locked doors which can be opened by four types of colored keys (gold, green, yellow, blue), one-way doors, secret rooms accessible through pushable wall blocks, and teleports that instantly take the player into another location within the level. There's also lighting effects and an automap function, sorely missed in Wolfenstein 3D. Calling this automap also shows your your current progress, rating and percentage of enemies killed. And there are crates you can shoot. They will explode and sometimes reveal some goodies. Another unique feature of the game is the fact that Dr. Goldfire appears periodically in certain sections on different levels and will actually attack Stone. After being hit a few times, he activates a teleporter on his watch and escapes. There are several weapons available, more than there are in Wolfenstein 3D. Also included are features such as clipping, and invisibility, and auto-mapping. Really new were in-game characters, who were not always hostile but sometimes even gave hints. Because of this, the pure "shoot everything that moves"- scheme was not valid anymore. Besides this, the game was not state of the art. The graphics were out-dated and did not look as good as others of that time, Doom and Terminator Rampage. A nice game of that time, but it did not manage to stand out. labelimagesubject

As always with Top Job, there are very nicely pixelated graphics in this game, even if the graphic style is a bit more unusual this time than in the other games. In terms of gameplay, the game stays within the standard of the genre without standing out negatively or positively. So it's definitely worth a look for adventure fans.

Bram Stoker's Dracula Psygnosis (TAG)1993In this shooter, you have to deal with undead. Not only with Dracula, as the title foreshadows, but that would be some untypical 3D shooter, anyways. Though it has the license of the Francis Ford Coppola movie based on Stoker's novel, there is little relation to events in the movie. Legions of the undead are rising from their graves, and it's your job to put a stop to the madness. To do this, you must purify the many creature-spawning graves on Dracula's estate while fending off the horrendous monsters along the way. Having Psygnosis’ name on the box can’t rescue Dracula from the tedious gameplay – rooms in the estate begin to resemble one another after a while, and puzzles are quite simplistic and boring (find key X to unlock door Y). I looked for that game for an eternity, because I played the demo version in 1993, but never found the full game those days. Sometimes I even thought I just dreamed that game and it never existed ;-). Anyways, here you can take a look yourself if you like.***

Tate, an insane, whiny sob wishes to create a world filled with the people he loves most...himself. To do that, he plans to use one of the Professor's inventions and clone a billion versions of himself to populate the world. It's up to Bud Tucker to track down the loon and the Professor before Barryville becomes Tate Town. It's a point & click adventure where you must travel to various locations in Barryville and find clues and help from the citizens there. The game play consists of picking up items and using them when necessary. There are 3 parts in the game and in the first part, Bud Tucker is locked up in a crumbly hotel in Seedy Street. Speech is available in the game as well as subtitles. The menu (pick up, use, etc) can be displayed in words as well as icons. This cartoon adventure is sadly little known because Eidos cancelled its plan to distribute the game in the U.S... probably due to poor sales in Europe, which is probably due to lack of marketing. Because: it's a fun and solid game in every respect with a wacky plot, though disappointingly short.***

Exposed to gamma radiation, the mysterious object caused a portal to appear, which connected two worlds. Alien invasion began. It's time for you, a brave special agent, to descend into Corridor 7 where the fate of humanity must be decided. Transparent glass, a motion tracker and enemies that seem to morph from harmless adverseries break up the traditional shooting. Also included are some view-enhancers (infrared,...). It's not the best shooter, but it offers a solid entertaining game. The CD edition released in 1995 included a number of extra levels in addition to the disk version as well as full support for multiplayer over IPX, new weapons and Redbook CD-Audio.***Requires 2Mo RAM***

Cyberwar  SCi1994Cyberwar is the sequel to the computer game adaptation of "The Lawnmower Man". The original movie, directed by Brett Leonard and very loosely inspired by the Stephen King short story, exploited the hype that had formed around the Virtual Reality phenomenon in the early 1990's. You play as Dr. Angelo, sent in to Virtual Reality to defeat Jobe, who, in the film was born simple but increased his brain capacity by 400% using Virtual Reality. He eventually leaves his physical body and enters VR permanantly. As the first game ends, Dr. Angelo is overwhelmed by Cyberjobe's powers, but in a moment of redemption Cyberjobe realizes he has not lost all his humanity and releases his prisoners. This is where Cyberwar starts. Once again Dr. Angelo must jack into the cyberspace and confront a new threat. It is a new version of the Cyberjobe, that was restored from a Virtual Space Industries backup before their headquarters blew up. This being is just as powerful as the original Jobe but is completely soulless and lacks any form of humanity. Just like its predecessor, Cyberwar has the player face a number of laser-game-like sequences in a pre-rendered 3D environment. The various subgames span from the classical "right-button-at-the-right-time" to puzzle-solving. The Cyberworld is divided into three large areas, each residing onto a game disc. The player is allowed to save up to a maximum of three times per disc. One common action subsequence has the player drive a virtual vehicle through a city or tunnel, and press the appropriate arrow key to avoid crashing into obstacles. These subgames are called Cyberboogie and Circuit Citie. There is quite some variety among puzzle subgames, which rely mostly on subsequent attempts. In one, called Projectile Ranges, you will have to find the right combination of angle and power in order to get a cannon shot through an invisible wall, behind which lies a minion of Cyberjobe. Reverse Engineering follows a similar pattern, as you will have to find a combination of shape and color, either of which allows you a safe passage to the other side. Finally the Security Door subsection includes the classic cogs, maze and tangram puzzles. Other subsections include the Debugging Area, a maze with a few rooms where you must find the switch that opens the exit; the Mutation Storage, a simplistic shooting gallery based more on timing than aim; the Hex-Lock station, where all you have to do is enter a code found in the Mutation Storage (?). It is no surprise that Cyberwar has some quite limited gameplay in favor of back-then impressive graphics and sound (yet never as much as a Don Bluth lasergame). Nevertheless it's an OK game for those who won't roll on the floor with laughter when they hear the words "Interactive Movie".***

The designs of H.R. Giger are pivotal in this horror-tinged point 'n click adventure. Players will be swapping between the Normal World and the Dark World, with 75 prerendered 3D locations in total. There are 40 characters to interact with. The goal is to overthrow the Behemoth of the Dark World and cut through the corruption of the Normal World.

Movement, action and dialogue interaction modes are toggled between using the right mouse button, with the full screen used for location display unless the game menu or inventory bars are called into use.

While similar to other Legend's graphical adventures, Death Gate broke new grounds with an ingenious spellcasting interface that is superbly integrated into the game engine, and required to solve many puzzles. The storyline is strong, although a little too simplistic given the rich fantasy world of the books. Death Gate is also notable for being the first Legend game to feature truly exceptional voice acting - among the best of its kind. With excellent writing, challenging but not-too-difficult puzzles, and a very high production value with respect to SVGA graphics and voice acting, Death Gate is one of Legend's finest and most underrated games. A must-have.***
