Castle Adventure  author;Keypunch Software1984Also released by Keypunch Software in 1987 in the compilation "Swords and Sorcery" under the title "The Golden Wombat".***This is an enjoyable game I played on a PCjr as a child. One of the neat things about it was the extra items and treasures to collect. There are multiple solutions Only 5 items are required for the simplest solution to escaping the castle. Killing the monsters is not strictly required and many of the objects do not relate to escaping, their just for the high score. It is quite simular to Atari Adventure, but more complex in all aspects plus the added text parser. Three parser commands are all that's required for the simplest escape. Finding all the items will require considerable more typing. There is also an item in the game that tells how to escape, easy. Its nice that beating the game is easy, for less skilled players yet getting a high score is more challenging. Obviously, this was the intent of the author.
[Zerothis]***This is a text plus graphical adventure in text-only mode. Movement is performed with the arrow keys and combat is in real-time. But text descriptions appear at the bottom on the screen and the player can use a text parser for more detailed interaction with objects and characters or to use a more complex solution that the arrow keys can provide. While the goal is to escape the 83 room castle using 12 objects found therein. 8 enemies and two locked doors will hinder progress. Players may opt to find some or all of the 13 treasures to achieve a higher score. 1550 is the highest score possible.

This game was developed and published as Shareware by Kevin Bales. He used the term Freeware and asked for a suggested $10 if someone enjoyed or used the game. Keypunch Software illegally included this game in their Swords and Sorcery collection as Golden Wombat. The game is written in Microsoft BASIC and compiled.
[Zerothis]***You are trapped in a deserted Castle and you must escape. It is rumored that the castle is full of treasures. Can you find them all?

Pool of Radiance  SSI (Westwood Associates;SSI Special Projects Group)1988The first chapter in The Forgotten Realms Epic. Play Ruins of Adventure, a Forgotten Realms AD&D game module based on this game.

A few defiant humans are trying to reclaim the war torn city of Phlan from bands of monsters. They plan to build a new city on the ruins of the old. It seems as though the monsters are organized under someone's command to prevent the rebuilding. The player commands a group of hired adventures to clear monsters from the city, from the city's surrounding defenses, and to investigate the source of the attacks.

The Apple and Commodore versions were simultaneously developed according to the article "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" by Croftward in "G.M. the Independent Fantasy Roleplaying Magazine", September 1988. Other versions originate from ports of one of these.

[49]***This game has some interactive fiction, adventure and not yet defined elements. Players can visually search the room or listen find secrets, to get descriptions of the room, find riddles that hint at solutions to puzzles, and/or find clues to events in the nearby area. These are returned as text as the game has no sound whatsoever.

Advancement must be confirmed by player actions. Crosses are not just symbols in this game, they are apparently melee weapons. Equipment can require a minimum level of experience and/or a minimum character attribute. Clerics must pray to cast spells (all one action). The petitioned god can grant the cast, not answer, or punish the character. These random responses seem to be based on the character's previous actions but the mechanism is unclear.

The game is automatically saved much the same way as typical rogue-likes but a bit less often. Simply walking from one place to the next does not prompt a save, but reading a clue or resolving an encounter does. There is also a game "backup" save system. When a player is in a "sanctuary" they may manually create a second save.

Experience is shared but most of it distributed unequally based on a character's participation. The mechanism is unclear. Killing blows and attacks delivering significant damage have the most reward. Other actions are rewarded as well no mater what the result. Every character still gets something even if they did not interact with the battle at all. For example, if the first move of a battle is the player's fighter killing a single foe with a single blow, all other party members will get at least 1 XP or more for a stronger enemey.***If a character sacrifices their life to save their fellows, they lose piety. Ken's Labyrinth Epic Megagames1993Ken Silverman's debut was published when he was only 17 years old. He got famous with the several times licensed "Build" engine, seen first in Duke Nukem 3D. In Ken's Labyrinth, you have to rescue your dog and the world along the way. The graphics remind one of the Wolfenstein engine, but the monsters are drawn worse. Generally, the game doesn't bubble over with ideas, that can be seen already in the title. ;-) In November 1999, the full version was released as freeware***Released as freeware in 1999 and the source code was released in 2001.
