Note: Although DX3 is enough to play the game, the game's readme suggests DX5 as the game supposedly performs much better on it.***Set in the grim, dark future, Take No Prisoners puts you in control of Slade, a post-apocalyptic mercenary empowered with the choice to destroy the world...or save it. Based on Raven Software's in-house Vampire engine, Take No Prisoners was developed concurrently with MageSlayer from July 1996 - August 1997 and was released by Red Orb Entertainment, a division of Broderbund Software.

Originally called RIOT (and subsequently Outrage), Take No Prisoners pioneered a new variation of top-down gameplay made popular by the arcade classic Gauntlet by setting the character at the bottom of the screen and exploring the world from a 2 ½D view. This innovation was hailed as a "fresh new perspective" and a "breath of fresh air" in the action gaming genre.

Take No Prisoners shipped with 30 single-player levels, 22 different enemies, 21 weapons, 22 combat items, 3 usable vehicles and a variety of multiplayer game modes including deathmatch, capture the flag, arsenal and assassin. In addition, Take No Prisoners was one of the first games to hit the market that took full advantage of 3-D hardware acceleration and colored lighting.

Trespasser  Electronic Arts (DreamWorks Interactive)1998aim deadzone - this is essentially a side effect of the control system where you control the arm instead of any single item held in it like in other games.
limited capacity - you only have space for one item (any item, regardless of type or size) in your "inventory" and whatever is held in your hand at the moment. Rather silly in the way that a keycard or floppy disk in your pocket removes the possibility of carrying a rifle or pistol in your belt or back.
self awareness - border case, your legs are never seen, only the chest (which contains the "health display") and possibly a weapon peeking from your belt.
physics - besides the very basic puzzles based on them, the game practically revolves around the physics and the unusual control system used to interact with it. The movement of the dinos looks like it attempts to (primitively) simulate real movement rather than using frames like usual, this usually gives very strange looking walking animation for them as well as making them stumble occasionally (which although funny, is very poor representation of the agility most of these creatures possessed). Other cases come with the items you hold in your hand, usually being knocked off by the slightest force, and sometimes inadvertently by the dinos when they attack you (although more often they just brush the weapon aside). This may appear intentional, but it's likely accidental from their part.
gameplayinn - Ragdoll physics, the first game to use them. Although this received a negative response, ragdoll physics have become an integral part of modern games.

Outwars Microsoft (SingleTrac)1998hang glider - not literally, the power armor at some point become fitted with foldable wings which are used like hang glider except for the fact that you also have the power armor's standard jetpack for additional propulsion.***DESCRIPTION

As a Dreadnaut soldier, you will lead a team of space troopers against an alien insect force in a planet by planet battle to save the universe.

You are the best we have. You are one mean space marine. Succeed in your mission objectives and we all survive. Fail...and you condemn us all.

FEATURES

Arsenal of Weapons - Arm your space troopers with a variety of lethal weaponry including heat-seeking swarm missiles, flechette cannons, plasma rifles, grenade launchers, and proximity mines before each level.

3D Interactive Audio - Outwars features a fully interactive soundtrack and sound system. All noises are rendered in 3D and are a major part of the gameplay -- enemy shrieks get louder and more alarming as you near them (even if they are behind a wall!), waterfall noises become louder, and ship noises go through Doppler warping as they scream past you in the full heat of battle.

Additionally, the music itself is interactive and sets the tone for each mission. Singletrac has combined a rich redbook audio soundtrack with streaming interactive music that changes based on the game changes. You're searching: it's tense, suspended. You're fighting: it's a wild pounding battle song that will get your heart rate going and keep your fingers hitting those triggers faster, faster, faster.

Rocket-Pack Dynamics - You'll experience dizzying heights and enormous depths while piloting a jet-pack armed with lethal firepower to take on the exo-skeleton adversaries.

Large, diverse environments - Outwars includes a wide variety of diverse environments including a lush tropical planet, a desert mining colony, a forbidding ice planet and a planet sized hive. Additionally, the gameplay environments in Outwars are expansive; thus, your not just confined to the oppressive environments seen in most run-n-guns. This opens up the gameplay possibilities and makes the game less predicable.

Multiple modes of motion - Players can choose from different method of motions including running, gliding and jet packing across vast environments.

Unique gameplay strategy - You will face a variety of strategy options in Outwars, such as: Is there enough fuel to make it out of the deep, underground cavern? Would it be better to rush the alien insect force with the whole team, or send someone around to outflank them? Are the your adversaries running away because they were afraid or are they preparing an ambush?

Mission-based levels - Outwars offers sophisticated objectives for each mission that vary from stealth under-cover work to frenetic combat action to team-assisted cooperative and research missions. This is not a standard "shoot everything and find the exit" game.

Aggressive Adversaries - Deal with adversaries that will actively pursue you across vast landscapes and employ a variety of attacks in order to destroy you.

Engaging Storyline - As you achieve your missions, you learn about the aliens that you are battling and their devious plans as your teammates work feverishly to help you foil them. Failure has one consequence: DOOM.

Personalized characters - Character options allow you to choose to play as a man or a woman and outfit your teammates before third-person gameplay.

Varied Multi-Player Play - OutWars supports modem, LAN and Internet play (via the Internet Gaming Zone) and includes cooperative, capture-the-flag, and death-match modes of play.

Technology Support - MMX technology and Direct 3D acceleration are included for immersive play.

Unreal  GT Interactive;Infogrames (Epic MegaGames;Digital Extremes)1998MSRP: $54.95 (U.S.)***

1999 Unreal Gold - re-release that bundled Return to Na Pali.
2000-09-22 - re-release by Infogrames
2001 another re-release by Infogrames***Although Unreal was great back in the days it first came out, it hasn't fared well against the ravages of time. It's difficult to get running on modern Windows operating systems (with hardware 3D acceleration, software rendering works fine) and when you do, it's a terrible realization that it doesn't look as great as you remember. Something 3D games are perhaps only now managing to accomplish (if even now), a level of detail that can survive for ages like 2D graphics reached long ago.

The difficulty setting is a bit curious as it adjusts the dodge-firing ratio, so the easiest difficulty may actually be the hardest since the enemies dodge a _lot_, while at hardest they practically just stand there and shoot at you a never ending stream of bullets/rockets/whatever. So, if you're poor shot, go for harder difficulties, if you're poor dodger, go for easy. The normal difficulty and those near it balance it out so it may be harder or easier depending on your skill and playstyle.***Great FP-Shooter, network-playing, Missiondisc available

Final Fantasy VII  Eidos;Square Enix (Square;Square Enix)1998The game was re-released in 2012 with the following added: cloud saves, achievements, and an easy access cheat ("Character Booster"). And updated to run on modern Windows OS.***Supposedly, this is not a code port. None of the original source code was used by the outside team from Hawaii that brought this game to Windows. When FF7 for PlayStation was completed, the entire team was reassigned or fired and their unique hardware was sold or dismantled. The source code was unique to the development hardware. Without the specialized hardware, the source code was not compileble or even modifiable in any useful way. Square had neither the people nor the code to do a port. All the new team had was the data specific to the PSX (barely useful) and unuseable source code. Eventually the team discovered that what they had been given was not even from the final PSX version, it was roughly rendered temporary data and pre-alpha code that had never actual been successfully compiled. And to top it off, no one on this new team had every worked on a game before. All this is known because all of the debug information (including rants and raves by the team) were unintentionally left in the executable.***First PC conversion of a Final Fantasy game that finally brought the bizarre numbering system in line in both Japan and Europe/USA.

PC RPGs were never the same again, the gigantic storyline and superb combat translated into the keyboard PC layout with surprising success.
