The game does not install on NT versions of Windows such as Windows 2000 and later. You can circumvent this easily just by copying the MAGESLAY folder from CD to where-ever you would've installed the game otherwise, it requires nothing more spectacular than that.***MageSlayer was developed by Raven Software from 1996 - 1997 and published by GT Interactive for the PC. Utilizing the same Vampire engine as Take No Prisoners, MageSlayer was Raven's tribute to top-down action games.

The MageSlayer engine utilized Direct 3D to supported most 3D accelerator cards on the market at the time in order to offer superior graphics quality and other features like colored lighting. All of the levels for MageSlayer were created using 3D Studio Max along with several plugins that were custom-written for in house use to make texturing and scripting much easier than it had been in the past.

In addition to a single player experience that featured four character classes, five worlds and thirty levels, MageSlayer also featured solid multiplayer game modes for up to sixteen players. MageSlayer marked another Raven Software collaboration with the fantasy artist Brom, who did the box cover artwork for the title.

Outwars Microsoft (SingleTrac)1998hang glider - not literally, the power armor at some point become fitted with foldable wings which are used like hang glider except for the fact that you also have the power armor's standard jetpack for additional propulsion.***DESCRIPTION

As a Dreadnaut soldier, you will lead a team of space troopers against an alien insect force in a planet by planet battle to save the universe.

You are the best we have. You are one mean space marine. Succeed in your mission objectives and we all survive. Fail...and you condemn us all.

FEATURES

Arsenal of Weapons - Arm your space troopers with a variety of lethal weaponry including heat-seeking swarm missiles, flechette cannons, plasma rifles, grenade launchers, and proximity mines before each level.

3D Interactive Audio - Outwars features a fully interactive soundtrack and sound system. All noises are rendered in 3D and are a major part of the gameplay -- enemy shrieks get louder and more alarming as you near them (even if they are behind a wall!), waterfall noises become louder, and ship noises go through Doppler warping as they scream past you in the full heat of battle.

Additionally, the music itself is interactive and sets the tone for each mission. Singletrac has combined a rich redbook audio soundtrack with streaming interactive music that changes based on the game changes. You're searching: it's tense, suspended. You're fighting: it's a wild pounding battle song that will get your heart rate going and keep your fingers hitting those triggers faster, faster, faster.

Rocket-Pack Dynamics - You'll experience dizzying heights and enormous depths while piloting a jet-pack armed with lethal firepower to take on the exo-skeleton adversaries.

Large, diverse environments - Outwars includes a wide variety of diverse environments including a lush tropical planet, a desert mining colony, a forbidding ice planet and a planet sized hive. Additionally, the gameplay environments in Outwars are expansive; thus, your not just confined to the oppressive environments seen in most run-n-guns. This opens up the gameplay possibilities and makes the game less predicable.

Multiple modes of motion - Players can choose from different method of motions including running, gliding and jet packing across vast environments.

Unique gameplay strategy - You will face a variety of strategy options in Outwars, such as: Is there enough fuel to make it out of the deep, underground cavern? Would it be better to rush the alien insect force with the whole team, or send someone around to outflank them? Are the your adversaries running away because they were afraid or are they preparing an ambush?

Mission-based levels - Outwars offers sophisticated objectives for each mission that vary from stealth under-cover work to frenetic combat action to team-assisted cooperative and research missions. This is not a standard "shoot everything and find the exit" game.

Aggressive Adversaries - Deal with adversaries that will actively pursue you across vast landscapes and employ a variety of attacks in order to destroy you.

Engaging Storyline - As you achieve your missions, you learn about the aliens that you are battling and their devious plans as your teammates work feverishly to help you foil them. Failure has one consequence: DOOM.

Personalized characters - Character options allow you to choose to play as a man or a woman and outfit your teammates before third-person gameplay.

Varied Multi-Player Play - OutWars supports modem, LAN and Internet play (via the Internet Gaming Zone) and includes cooperative, capture-the-flag, and death-match modes of play.

Technology Support - MMX technology and Direct 3D acceleration are included for immersive play.

Thief: The Dark Project  Eidos (Looking Glass Studios)1998Working title: The Dark Project
Original project title: Dark Camelot***sentient artefact - The Eye
gameplayinn - first person stealth; possibly started the whole stealth game rage.***To call Thief a first-person shooter is to strip away what the game brought to the gaming scene. Set in a magical medieval city, the player is a thief, with the ability to become almost invisible in shadows. And here is where 'first-person sneaker' became it's own genre.

Emphasizing strategy and stealth over raw killing ability, the game brought a new idea to first-person shooters. Sure, the sword and bow are necessary, but the blackjack, and avoiding combat, are even more effective.

Well designed cut scenes, incredible graphics, unmatchable atmosphere, etc etc all meant that Thief was a superb game.

Uses the AD&D ruleset. is set in Forgotten realms where Baldur's Gate is a location. This game begins the Baldur's Gate series. Players can create and name Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-Elf, Halfling, and Gnome characters of either gender of the Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric, Ranger, Druid, or Paladin classes. Some classes can engage in sorcery according to the AD&D ruleset. Players can also dual-class or multi-class according the AD&D ruleset. In a 1-player game, the player controls an entire party, in multiplayer games, each player can control one or more characters (or none at all). Players must cooperate, there is no competitive options in the game. There are multiple ways for a character to summon underlings for temporary help. Characters must sleep or suffer the effects of fatigued. Characters can also become poisoned, confused, charmed, enfeebled, paralyzed, turned to stone, encumbered, impaired, or drunk if the character does avoid situations that lead to such effects. The detail of the fantasy world this game takes place in seems to qualify it as belonging to the high fantasy genre. Characters can use bows, crossbows, slings, knives, swords, axes, bludgeons, pole arms, whips, or fight unarmed (non-lethal). A vast number of items can be aquired from stashes in the world, on defeated foes, or purchased from shops or individuals. The AI of the player's characters can be programmed in a scriptable language. But this is highly optional as adequate AIs are provided or the player can pause constantly to direct everybody with point-n-click commands; then unpause for as long as those commands are helpfully being executed. (Documentation for Scripting can be found on the 1st CD. Users have created AIs that can be found online and loaded into an existing game). Many NPC can be joined to the party and left to retrieve later. Some will leave if they are unhappy with the main characters actions. Evil people prefer the main character to do evil, good characters prefer good. Some NPC have their on purposes for joining and will stay of leave depending on the changing conditions matching their goals or not. The experience system follows the AD&D ruleset. This includes XP awarded for defeating enemies and for completing quests (which are documented on-the-fly in an automated journal that also records some plot information). The XP required to level up are preset according the the AD&D ruleset. When leveling up (at the players initiation, once the require XP are collected), skill points are awarded that can be distributed to a subset of skills available to the character's class (not all AD&D skills are included in this game). Several small village/towns can be visited and Baldur's Gate is a massive 10+ levels (not counting interiors that include multistory buildings) of civilization that approaches the definition of a city. Several large keeps make up whole levels (again not counting interiors that include multistory buildings). Several tall towers can be explored. Many multilevel mines and dungeons can or must be explored. Developers comments can be read on some tombstones a cemetery.
Bauldur's Gate has a sewer system as a location.
. Books, scrolls, and documents in the game offer extraneous details about the Forgotten Realms and Bauldur's Gate area, plot background, plot information, and character advancement training (rare). This game is available in a 5 CD set (original), 3 CD set, or on a single DVD to save on disc swapping. The game can be configured to run from the various CD or have them installed to hard drive per CD. But, upon running the game will require CD 1 to be in the drive for copy egest.
The plot shares some similarities to events in the Book of The Watchers (from the Book of Enoch, an apocryphal Jewish writing). In Baldur's Gate, an unearthly being came to the earthly realm and copulated with mortal females. The children of these unions have unusual and advanced traits and eventual fight with and kill each other. The company, on doing this sequel, had to keep up with the original game's quality and fun. The problem was, without Molyneux.

Thankfully, Bullfrog proved that they can still create classic games even without their former mentor. This game takes everything that made it's prequel great, and improves it all.

Revenant Eidos (Cinmatix)1999
]Revenant was unlucky enough to be caught in the fall of Ion Storm's [game=#16822]Daikatana[/game]. Eidos had made handsome contracts and when Daikatana flopped, Eidos proceeded in budget cuts and attempted to cash in on its other projects. Thus in Revenant, NPCs will be completely oblivious after some point in the game and they won't respond to your heroic actions. There are even some NPCs who promise to join you later, but do not (though these 3 NPCs are playable in the multiplayer game). The game rather deflates after the middle of the story. After this point the game becomes somewhat of one big outdoor dungeon crawl. The vast variety of armor, combined with the lack of time between the pieces and the lack of accomplishment when acquiring new armor increases the feeling of a rushed game. And the story lacks certain vital details, leaving the player somewhat confused about the backstory and motives of the characters.
Sadly, the game would've been awesome if this hadn't happened. Another thing is that the game seems to be unable to run in a nice manner in Windows XP (although it does run, in a choppy way).***From official site:

Ultima IX: Ascension  Origin;Electronic Arts (Origin)1999Ultima IX is best enjoyed following a neurolyser flash to forget the existance of every other game in the Ultima series (except maybe the Runes sub-series). And a second neurolyser flash afterwards to forget the bugs.***The tag note now claims this is conclusion to the UW series, but isn't this rather a conclusion to the Age of Armageddon sub-series? In all regards this seems unrelated to UW.***The Dragon Edition was a collectors pack containing the 2 Game CDs plus The [game=Ultima Collection]Ultima Collection[/game] CD (the 1st 8 Ultimas), 8 virtue cards, an Ankh pendant, an Ascension poster, a cloth map, a leather Game Journal, a leather Book of Magic (animals were sacrificed for this entertainment), a certification from Lord British, and an Ultima Collection reference card. Believe it or not, this is intended to be the finale of the Ultima series. Officially, the 3rd game of the Age of Armageddon trilogy which is the 3rd age, and the 3rd game of Ultima Underworld series. Fans who have been paying close attention would have noted some requirements in prophecy doled out in the previous games. Players will not find the vast majority of these prophecies fulfilled in this game. It is not a spoiler to say ascendancy occurs, the game makes it obvious in title, box art, and in-game, from the very beginning. The Ultima universe is a different one from ours where the protagonist is from Earth. The protagonist, sort of, fulfills his roles in this game that were set when Lord British chose him in Ultima IV to become the Avatar. It is blatently shown that
the Guarding
is indestructible which had been alluded to in the earlier games. Pirates play an important role in the main plot and several side-quests and plots. But, officially, it is set in the Ultima universe and ends the Age of Armageddon. The setting is consistent with a late medieval-theme. Cannons, machines, weapons, ship technology and the artwork in the game place it on the cusp of a Renaissance-theme; but does not quite qualify. Archery of a sort occurs. This game was originally designed for Voodoo Graphics/3Dfx cards, which utilized the Glide3D API. The released game also contained various options to use DirectX technologies. The Direct3D option was barely passable. Official patches brought the requirement of DirectX 6. An unofficial patch from members of the development team require DirectX 7. There are people being held prisoner,
the Avatar
at one point. The ever present Rule Britannia music accompanies Lord British's castle. Widescreen is not officially supported but the config file allows the horizontal and vertical resolution to be manually specified. So if the provided numbers match a resolution supported by your card and monitor, it works. Although to wide an aspect will cause controls for inventory and books to be off-screen. It supports vertical screen in this way also. It does not support alternate projections (anamorphic), so if your monitor projects the given mode anamorphicly, the image will be distorted the same.
After talking and running around a bit, you get into a mockup fight with the "strongest" of the village. Who, although can take a beating, uses ridiculously simple combat tactics that are easily beaten. After beating him up, the village gets attacked by some stupidhead viking thinking serving Loki is actually good idea and sens Ragnar and his fellow vikings to the bottom of the sea, killing everyone, you included.

While slowly descending towards the bottom of the sea, quite dead as you are, you hear the voice of Odin, who demands you to awaken, explaining its not your time yet. And so you are miraculously (although not very dramatically) resurrected, at full health and ready to beat some ass. But where are you? In some natural caves filled with bloodthirsty critters, and you're supposed to beat through them before you can go about stomping the renegade Loki worshipping vikings who so deserve a grand beating by your Odin-granted powers of vengeance. Meaning, the game instantly devolves to simple hack-and-slash adventure for a loooooong time from the start with some rare bits of plot thrown in for measure so common of the games at that time.
On non-spoiler frontier, you almost always have 3 weapons (sword, mace and axe) and a shield. Each weapon offers one magical power you can use after charging up your magical batteries by beating up people, and these change with newer weapons. You can even throw them at your enemies if you feel so inclined and this is actually good idea when a lot of weapons of that type are lying around or you just want to get rid of your old crappier one. Shields can be broken, both your's and your enemies' (it was either axe or mace that excelled in this, I forgot), but despite this small potential setback, shields are important part of survival.

The game was quite fun back in the days, but like with many 3D games, it's hard to appreciate it after the technology behind it has gone so far from those primitive times.***Includes a very basic hack&slash P&P RPG in PDF format on the CD.

Gothic  Egmont Interactive;Xicat Interactive (Piranha Bytes)2001This nice German developed RPG adventure is set against the backdrop of a landscape savaged by war, the King of the human territories must find enough ore to forge weapons for his army to use in defence against the Orc Hordes. The King's mines are set in a large magical sphere and are worked by prisoners captured from across the kingdom. And it is into this sphere that you are thrown, charged with the task of delivering a letter – a letter that might just mark the turning point in the war against the Orcs. The Gothic world is constantly changing and evolving: events will occur that can alter the relationships between several groups of characters. NPCs are fully rounded with their own daily habits and relationships: they get up, work, go to bed, chat with each other and so on. More significantly, monsters cooperate with each other and are able to figure things out; they have individual perception. Some can be lured with food or noise, some will run away from bright light. Some can only hear or detect movement. Each character has the ability, with the correct training, to improve particular skills as the game progresses: training with the master of the sword, for example, will result in a character displaying noticeably more skilled swordsmanship. It is so much more satisfying to witness the effect of the skills you have learnt when they are visible in your character as oppose to a meaningless number rating, improving say, from 8 to 10. These 'optical' improvements are for the whole range of skills included in Gothic. The two different classes of magic (which are absolutely independent from each other) work along the same lines.***

Command & Conquer: Renegade Electronic Arts (Westwood Pacific)2002Command & Conquer: Renegade is a first-person 3D shooter set in the Command & Conquer universe. Game progression is mission-driven; most missions have primary, secondary, and tertiary objectives. A few drive able vehicles are available. A world of adventure where you can explore sprawling landscapes in a seamlessly unfolding story awaits...Your adventures take place in the Kingdom of Ehb is one of the youngest states bordering the Plain of Tears. Protected by a ring of superb fortifications and heir to the 10th Legion-arguably one of the best trained armies in the world, the Kingdom of Ehb has, so far, been shielded from the raids and invasions that have devastated many of its neighboring states on the Plain.Within Ehb's borders, there is an astonishing diversity in geography and cultures. Most inhabitants worship Azunai, an ancient god of the pre-Imperial Agallan Peaks. Dwarves and men live together in harmony and bow to the same king. Sorcerers are also more accepted than in other countries, thanks in large part to the efforts of Merik, Grand Mage and Warden of Shadows of the 10th Legion. And in the heart of the kingdom, a strange and often contrary race called the Droog is allowed a degree of autonomy, despite its sometimes-troublesome alliances. It is a country in search of an identity, caught between the glories of a fallen past and the potential for an even greater future. Arx Fatalis  JoWood Productions (Arkane Studios)2002Cast away from the surface of the Earth by the disappearance of the sun, Mankind lived hidden underground in the Fortress of Arx. Humans only have magic left to survive against Ratmen, Dragons and starvation...

But a much greater danger is hovering above the world of Arx Fatalis. Lurking in the eternal darkness of the mines, it feeds off the innocent souls of the city. It is not a monster. It is not human. It is pure evil.

The adventure has just started, and soon,
the fate of Arx, will be in your hands.

Arx Fatalis is a medieval heroic fantasy first person role playing game which places the accent on immersion, storyline and innovative magic system.

Arx Fatalis is intended for RPG and adventure players.

Dive into the universe of Arx

Arx Fatalis is an RPG that thrusts the player into an extremely complex fantastic world. Arx Fatalis combines a rich storyline with impressive medieval settings. The easy to use interface results in maximum interaction. The player is in an intense immersion state where he can feel how each one of his actions affects the surrounding world. The goal of the game is to reduce to nothing the cult of Akbaa, God of destruction and Chaos, and thus, prevent him from returning to the physical world. If the player fails, the demon will crush Arx under its rule of blood and terror.

The player, assuming the role of potential hero, fights in a large underground fortress, with wood clubs, swords, lances. and many magic artifacts, against the threat of multiple underground creatures (Goblins, Trolls, Ratmen and other vicious creatures.)

But rough power is not always the best road to victory. The hero may also use the new "screen magic" to advance. By using the mouse, magic runes have to be drawn and combined on screen in order to create powerful spells that will protect the player or give him the strength to defeat his enemies and to complete his quest.

In addition to the fight against demons and monsters, there is also a practically infinite number of interactions with the creatures and objects in the fortress, which enable the player to regain his memory, solve enigmas, and fulfill quests. By accumulating experience points, the player is able to lead his hero and train him any way he wants.

Dare to enter the world of Arx Fatalis. Explore the underground cities, secret temples, ancient mine tunnels, discover forgotten civilizations and dominate the magic of Arx Fatalis...***The game may suffer from severe flickering and depth buffer issues under some circumstances. The actual cause is unknown as it fixed itself and I failed to reproduce it.

Bumb mapping used by the game is one of the earliest methods and causes some graphical glitching on at least NV's GPUs (buttons and doorways otherwise revealed by sufficiently high intuition are colored almost pitch black). Therefore it is recommended you disable it.

Forcing anti-aliasing causes some text to disappear, the game itself has no anti-aliasing options so this is only reminder not to do it in externally.***Minimum:

[Box blurb]***Worlds collide in Armies of Exigo, a fantasy RTS where the boundaries of the battlefield are broken and war is waged both above and below the ground. This game takes strategy to new depths as elves, beasts, knights, and creatures of the darkness are locked in an epic battle for survival.

In the world of Exigo, where peace and prosperity have reigned for years, the empires of man and beast faces their greatest threat yet. A sinister force known as The Fallen has awaken to strike where the inhabitants of this world least expect - from underground.

Users will take control of massive armies, wage wars in the forests and river valleys of the surface, then descend into the caverns and catacombs of the underworld to face off against the dark evil.

Armies on all sides will have the ability to delve deep underground to travel unseen by foes or borrow up to the surface to unleash powerful attacks on unsuspecting enemies. The gamer must devise never before deployed strategies for combat and defense as attacks can come from all directions.

Conquer as the heavily fortified Empire and control an army of knights, dwarves, elves and gnomes. Ravage the plains with the nomadic Beasts, leading tribes of ogres, trolls and other fantastic creatures. Emerge from deep to consume the world of light with The Fallen – a powerful force of dark elves, fallen warriors, swarming insects and other horrific creatures of the dark.

Engage in an epic three-part single player campaign and save the world of Exigo from the evil that threatens to plunge the world into darkness. Or go online for massive multiplayer skirmishes with up to eight players striving to conquer the surface and underworld. Success can only be achieved through a balance of military might and strategic alliances.

Doukutsu Monogatari  Pixel2004Game description from [[link:http://agtp.romhack.net/ Aeon Genesis]]:

Cave Story is a freeware sidescrolling action/adventure/platformer title with leanings towards Wonderboy and recent sidescrolling Castlevania titles. You control a little amnesiac who runs around helping out these rabbit-ish creatures called Mimigas while trying to find your way out of the giant cave inside the floating island which makes up the game's setting. You can expand your health meter by collecting Life Capsules in similar fashion to Metroid games, while you can get stronger by collecting energy to boost your firearms' output. Each weapon can be built up to the maximum level (3) fairly quickly, but taking damage will drain energy from its experience meter, sometimes causing it to level down. Given how quickly they power up this only tends to be an issue during boss fights, and even then there's usually plenty of opportunities for collecting more weapon energy. The game has loads of secrets, too. Shih Tzu and I haven't found everything, and we've each played it through a couple of times (not to mention having read the script.) It's pretty awesome that way. For a freeware Japanese platformer, it's fairly lengthy and has quite a large amount of text. I'd guesstimate that each playthrough, provided you knew what you were doing, would take about 4-6 hours. Tack on an extra couple of hours if you don't know what you're doing, possibly for extreme problems with nasty bosses (which this game has plenty of, especially towards the end.) We're also talking three very different endings, plenty of plot, and quite a cast of charming characters. It really is a superb little gem :)
