Strategy sub-genre where the player controls the game on large scale, often acting as a god of some sort or with no specific character, where player attempts to interact with and influence a number of autonomous individuals.
Sandbox - 1982 to 2023
A genre characterized with players ability to do pretty much whatever they want, often with construction/crafting options with little to no challenges (by default). Likely also employs open world design.
Sandbox mode - 2004 to 2019
Includes separate sandbox mode (besides normal non-sandbox mode), usually with normal dangers removed or set to optionally occur and no winning conditions.
