Anti-tank rifles were largely made useless after first world war as tank armor became too thick for them to penetrate. AM rifles are essentially the evolution of the same thing but used against lighter vehicles, such as cars and helicopters. They still have the same punch as the originals if not more, they just haven't been able to keep up with development of tank armor.
