Introduced in June of 1978. This operating system let users of Apple ][ computers use disks for the first time. Prior to this, they could only use cassette tapes.

It contained a bug that caused a newly created bootable disk to only boot on systems that had precisly the same amount of memory installed as the system that created the bootable disk. Apple quickly re-release a fixed 3.1 that was not identified as such. But, a user group had already created a patch that was used in all commercial Apple ][ bootloading disks until AppleDOS 3.2 was released.

AppleDOS 1.0 through 2.8 were merely internal builds of the project that was released as AppleDOS 3.1

The programmer of AppleDOS 3.1, with permission from Apple, donated documents and source code to the Computer History Museum in 2013. These are available to download at CHM's web site. It remains proprietary.
