John Carter is the protagonist or secondary character in 9 or the 11 books in the series. Disney's movie version of the series focuses on John Carter and the events of A Princess of Mars and slightly expands Edgar Rice Burroughs' participation in events (Burroughs wrote a fictionalized version of himself as a minor character within the series). Disney's movie, per usual, was not the original adaptation. A film company, The Asylum, made Princess of Mars (AKA:John Carter of Mars, AKA:The Martian Colony Wars) in 2009 for direct-to-DVD release. The Asylum adaptation begins near the year 2000 with John Carter as an American sniper serving in Afghanistan. Where as Disney's version and the original story begins in the late 19th century after the American Civil War (and John Carter begins as a Virginian).
