* Group - the most natural case for it to exist as characters inform their friends of something they noticed.
* Multiple protagonists
Not when this is plot specific chatter.

This can provide simply some entertainment for the player (e.g. random jokes or just otherwise humorous chatter), may contain clues to what they should be doing or how to solve their problem, may contain clues to secrets (either of their existence or how to get to them), and so forth.
