Alternate names: Geisha, Chevaliers

Courtesans/courtiers originally referred to attendants at court, but as time went on, the term changed. By the end of early modern period (approximately), actual courtesans disappeared and were replaced with plain prositutes, and although sexual services were also in the repertoire of courtesans, they were hardly limited to them like prostitutes. In modern times, the term courtesan is only associated with prostitutes or escorts.

This tag is for the early early modern period definition (or something from around that time), of a an entertainer not associated with court, but still not something as "base" as a plain prostitute. The concept of geisha has luckily maintained it's specific meaning and should be used as the primary reference. Escorts (call girls and such) may be the closest modern concept to them.
