Usually a separation of primary and secondary statistics with the player having mostly direct influence on primary statistics that aren't used for any calculations, effects, etc. on their own. But rather primary statistics are used to calculate secondary statistics that are actually used.
For example, strength statistic might not actually do anything on its own, but gives a modifier to attack damage. The modifier is the secondary stat that is actually in effect. More obvious case is when the primary attributes contribute to multiple secondary attributes in varying levels.
