The visuals of the game distract, obscure, or otherwise actively impair player's ability to follow the actually important parts of gameplay.


The first video game about Distracting visuals was released on November 1993.

Usually done via large amounts of movement from things that don't matter for gameplay at all. Such as graphical effects on projectiles expanding and showing up better than the projectiles themselves, especially when they exist in large numbers.

Note that most manic shooters don't count since everything that is there is usually quite dangerous and important to be noticed.
