They are found naturally in in Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and in New Zealand. The have a bit more tail than a hedgehog, which is nothing to boast about. Their whole bodies except their bellies are spiked. Their limbs are spiked on the outside. They may even have a few face spikes. Their spikes rarely fall off or come out. They are a type of hair that does not shed under normal conditions. Their spikes are individually articulated; they can walk on their spines should the need arise. They will quickly dig a hole to bury their vulnerable parts, leaving only their spikes exposed to a predator. They can lay nearly flat on the ground, like a spiny carpet. They will become a spiky ball if they must. They have long or longer narrow beak like snouts and a tongue to match for for licking up ants and termites even right out of their tunnels and hiding in trees. The females grow a pouch, similar to that of a kangaroo or marsupial, but only when they they have babies. At other times the pouch isn't there. They have a reputation for being difficult to catch, track, and keep in caged. They are probably smarter than dogs. Soil wood and plastic are no match for their claws and if digging fails to set them free from a cage they'll hatch an escape plan using stacking, wedges, and leverage. They carefully untie, unsnap, disassemble, or otherwise remove tracking devices. They are great diggers and will tear into earth, termite mounds, and trees to get at tasty insects or hide. They are excellent swimmers (maybe thats how they got to Tasmania, New Zealand and New Guinea). They can hibernate. They cannot yawn. They have no teeth. These mammals have the audacity to lay eggs. They are usually gentle and ignore other creatures until threatened.
They are solitary but rarely fight. They will also cooperate as a group. For instance, males will follow females who are almost ready to make until dozens of them join and form a line that follows the female for weeks. Sometimes they get tired of then and will cooperatively chase the female up a tree and dig a 10 inch deep trench around it. They can then relax and spend a little time contending with each other sumo style, sending the weaker or less enthusiastic males away while they wait for the female to decide.
