Game enforces player to progress forward, preventing backtracking either by constantly blocking the return path or simply not allowing movement in that direction.

Backtracking is artificially prevented in sidescrollers and blocked backtracking is usually more common in topdown or third person games.
Auto-scrolling games should not apply normally, though may be included if the player character does not move automatically with the scrolling except when pushed by the "back". This non-automatic movement can often lead to unwanted deaths from the character being crushed by some environmental obstacle and the inevitable wall of progress.
