Evolution plays part in the gameplay. Likely in the form of biological adaptation (adjusting to environmental change), spontaneous changes (mutation), or guided evolution (more advanced beings prodding and poking or influence from higher power).

Notable people involved: Will Wright

Notes:
* Covers evolution guided by the player (the species "choosing" its evolutionary path).
* NOT for forced evolution, see biotechnology for that.
* Self-directed evolution is usually indistinguishable from shapeshifting, so care needs to be done there. Usually the guiding line between the two is speed and direction, shapeshifting happens back and forth and rapidly while evolution is fairly unidirectional (not considering features athropying from lack of use) and happens slowly.
