Generally, the sides are chosen randomly.

One player has 1 piece. To start, they may place it in a dark square anywhere on their back row (opposite of the other player's back row). This player always moves first. Each move is one space diagonally in any of the four possible directions. If this piece makes it to the far row, this player wins.

The other player has 4 pieces. To start, they may place them in a dark square anywhere on their back row. One piece may move per turn. Each piece may move diagonally away from the back row in either of the two possible directions. When a piece reaches the far row, it must stay there. If these pieces can block the other player from making any legal moves, this player wins.

There is no jumping, taking of pieces, nor pushing of pieces.
