Commonly the group control is limited to pointing where to move, shoot, what to tamper with, follow/regroup and hold position. Usually accomplished by vocal commands with some basic gesturing. Player can NOT switch to control the other group members in the same manner they control the leader.
This is not applicable to top-down games in most cases as control of the leader and the other group members is identical.
Can be likened to strategic-shooter hybrid, where you have shooter like control of the leader while the others have a strategy game like control.
