The first video game about Grouping was released on December 1995.

Blizzard Entertainment, Blizzard and Electronic Arts has published most of these games

This covers three types of grouping:
1) Assigning a shortcut key to the selected units so the selection can be later re-called.
2) Creates a literal group so selecting even an individual of the group selects the whole.
3) Several (human) players form a temporary functional group (a party), usually with the intent of working cooperatively. (usually seen in non-strategy MMOs)
